The United States has reasserted its position as the number one destination for overseas students seeking higher education. The country welcomed over a million international students in the 2022-2023 academic year for college. A 12% rise over the previous year and the fastest growth in over four decades was observed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new international student enrollment was substantial, increasing by 14% in 2022-2023 after expanding by 80% the previous year. This expansion reflects the United States’ global status as a leader in higher education, with approximately 4,000 accredited schools offering diverse educational possibilities.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States is notably famous among Indian students, with a 35% growth in Indian students in the 2022-2023 academic year, totaling 268,923. This expansion can be attributed to the strong representation and outreach efforts of U.S. institutions and universities in India. The appealing U.S. job market, particularly in the tech and business sectors also aided this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enrollment increased across all degree levels and disciplines of study for the first time since the 2014-2015 academic year. Graduate programs saw a 21% increase. Furthermore, 198,793 Indian students are taking Optional Practical Training (OPT), which provides practical work experience after graduation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growth in international students from Sub-Saharan Africa and increased visa issuance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sub-Saharan Africa also saw a substantial increase, with Ghana among the top 25 countries sending students to the United States. Over 6,000 Ghanaian students studied in the United States during the 2022-2023 academic year, while the region rose by 18%. Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, and South Africa contributed to this expansion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fiscal 2023, the State Department issued over 40,000 student visas to African students, the most in a decade. This growth is part of the United States’ initiatives to connect African students with various U.S. educational institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Post-Pandemic recovery and future outlook<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic’s interruptions, the United States largely recovered to pre-pandemic levels of overseas students, with 95% physically studying on U.S. campuses in 2022-2023. Math and computer science, engineering, business and management, social sciences, and physical and life sciences were the most popular disciplines of study. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking ahead to autumn 2023, an 8% increase in international student enrollment will likely continue the growth trend.
