Veronika, his older sister, and Theresia, his younger sister, were his only siblings. They lived and worked on a farm owned by the Mendel family for more than 130 years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His family always valued education but lacked the financial resources to send him to school. Therefore, Mendel did various jobs to make ends meet. Mendel worked as a gardener and learned beekeeping in his childhood and used to go to an Opava gymnasium when he was young.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 1840 until 1843, he studied practical and theoretical philosophy and physics at the Philosophical Institute of the University of Olomouc. His sister, Theresia, helped him pay for his studies. Later, he helped raise her three children, two of whom became <a href=\"https:\/\/ischoolconnect.com\/blog\/top-healthcare-jobs-abroad-and-how-you-can-get-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">doctors<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"the-young-monk\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The young monk&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s read how the father of genetics became a young monk and a teacher.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Mendel captivated the Augustinian monks in Brunn (now Brno), who valued <a href=\"https:\/\/ischoolconnect.com\/blog\/top-science-quiz-questions-and-answers-for-practice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">science<\/a>, study, and <a href=\"https:\/\/ischoolconnect.com\/blog\/the-importance-of-education-reasons-why-we-need-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">education<\/a>. His professor thought he would be a good fit because of his talent in physics and math. Despite his reluctance to become a monk, his professor accepted Mendel into the order on September 7, 1843.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Mendel failed the teaching certificate examination twice but the University of Vienna allowed him to continue his education. He discovered his skills for teaching at this university. Besides this, he spent most of his time in the monastery&#8217;s botanical garden, growing fuchsias and pea plants.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"love-for-peas\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Love for peas&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mendel had no intention of conducting the first well-controlled and superbly designed genetic studies. His purpose was just to experiment with hybrid pea plants and see what would happen. He experimented by crossing true-breeding distinct kinds and concluded three things from this study-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>One in four pea plants exhibited purebred recessive genes.<\/li><li>Two out of four were hybrids.&nbsp;<\/li><li>One out of four were purebred dominant in the second generation.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Mendel derived the Laws of Inheritance from his experiments, along with the Law of Segregation and the Law of Independent Assortment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"2-initial-reception\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Initial reception&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On February 8 and March 8, 1865, Mendel presented his work &#8220;Versuche \u00fcber Pflanzenhybriden&#8221; (&#8220;Experiments on Plant Hybridization&#8221;) at two sessions of the Natural History Society of Brno in Moravia. It received a few press reports in local newspapers, but the science community largely ignored it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Mendel&#8217;s study was published in Verhandlungen des naturforschenden Vereines in Br\u00fcnn in 1866, people viewed it as mostly about hybridization rather than inheritance.&nbsp;Consequently, it didn&#8217;t create an impact and was only quoted three times over the next 35 years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Notably, Charles Darwin was unaware of Mendel&#8217;s publication, but if he had been aware, genetics, as we know it today, would have emerged much sooner. Thus, Mendel&#8217;s scientific life serves as an illustration of how people overlook highly creative innovators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"3-rediscovery\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Later, he corresponded with Carl N\u00e4geli, one of the prominent scientists of the period, but N\u00e4geli did not see the significance of Mendel&#8217;s discoveries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mendel may have had concerns about his work, but he assured that his time would come.&nbsp;During Mendel&#8217;s lifetime, most biologists believed that the next generation got all the features by blending inheritance, which involved averaging the traits of each parent.&nbsp;Today, <a href=\"https:\/\/ischoolconnect.com\/blog\/great-scientists-wholl-inspire-you-to-pursue-a-career-in-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scientists<\/a> are using the operation of numerous genes with quantitative effects to explain instances of this phenomenon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"4-the-mendelian-paradox\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. The Mendelian paradox&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1936, Ronald Fisher, a well-known statistician, and population geneticist reconstructed Mendel&#8217;s experiments. He analyzed F2 (second filial) generation results and discovered that the ratio of dominant to recessive phenotypes (e.g. yellow versus green peas; round versus wrinkled peas) was implausibly and consistently too close to the expected ratio of 3 to 1.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Most, if not all, of the trials&#8217; findings, have been manipulated,&#8221; Fisher stated. Mendel&#8217;s stated observations were abominable, startling, and cooked, according to Fisher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"5-unrecognized-brilliance\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5.<\/strong> <strong>Unrecognized brilliance&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On February 8, 1865, Mendel presented his findings to the Brunn Society for Natural Science. Eventually, he became a meticulous record-keeper of meteorological and astronomical data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mendel just had enough time to complete his meteorological and apicultural research by 1871.
