So we've always heard the words, 'There is no place like home' but we never truly feel them until we are in an unknown country. To help you with your living choices here are several accommodation options for international students. Getting out of your comfort zone and adjusting to a new place in a different country is certainly a challenge. Accommodations are one of the most important things you need to sort out before you even leave. Primarily there are two options for student accommodations, on-campus which are traditional dorms or apartments shared with other students from your University and off-campus where you can either live in a rental or you could also opt for a homestay family. Here are some of the elaborate explanations for each of these different kinds of stays and you can choose one basis of your living choice. The very first one that we would like to talk about is the on-campus accommodation, almost every university has an on-campus accommodation and this is for pretty much all students. And the best thing about living on campus is that you would be continuously interacting and networking with the students over there. Along with traditional dormitories also known as residence halls which have a single or shared room facility. Some universities also have studios and two or three or even four-bedroom apartments where students can occupy a single room each and even share a common living area or even a kitchen. Basic amenities like a bed, a desk, a chair with the desk and many such basic things like these would be provided along with the dorm room. Some dorm rooms also provide storage spaces like small wardrobes or even drawers. Residence halls often have common bathroom facilities. Very few have a facility of private bathrooms in dorms. Dorms can either be co-ed or exclusively for girls and boys. Make sure you check that out with the dorm authority before you even head there. You are expected to carry basic things like bed linen and personal toiletries which aren't really provided to you when you move in. Go through the rule book and you will know what the university expects you to bring so that you can pack accordingly. Meal plans are available for all students and you can select a meal plan basis for your requirements. The average cost goes around 800 to 4000 USD and this is just a monthly cost depending on the room size, the amenities, the meal plans, the city, and even the university. Information on on-campus accommodations is provided on every University's website. Check out the website for its rules, the installment options and all of the other details. Next is the off-campus options. Now there are two major types of off-campus options, the first one is rentals and the second one is the different homestays that you can have. The rentals are a great option to bring out the free and independent you. Typically 11 months lease is to be signed before you move in. Amenities depend on the house and the room you choose. You will either have to have a private or shared bathroom. Mostly the rentals are fully furnished with a decent amount of basic amenities like beds, desks, wardrobes, laundry rooms, chairs and probably even a well-equipped kitchen. You will also have the freedom of selecting the apartment of your choice. It can either be a studio apartment, and it could be as big as you like it. If it's a big apartment then, of course, you can share with as many roommates and friends from university. Our last option here for today is homestays. Now, if you want to look at a very easy option for yourself then homestays are definitely the answer for you. Now, a homestay is basically a place where you will be staying with a family. This is usually considered a very safe option for students and you will be enjoying all the amenities that are available in the house. You know from simple things like home-cooked food to the comfort of a family around you. Along with this, it is also a great way to connect with local people. The rent approximately starts from 300 USD and the total housing cost goes up to 750 to 800 USD per month. Facilities like labs, libraries, gyms, dining halls, and most of all classrooms are available at arm’s length. A shorter distance ensures that students don’t have to worry about being late for their classes.

It also means that students have ready access to the Wi-Fi and TV cable. Not having to buy groceries or cook food also ensures that the student has more time to rest and study.

Social Life

Students are smack in the center of campus life and are exposed to a nexus of people. This helps students to interact and cement friendships, which is vital for a healthy social life. For international students, it can also be an exciting opportunity to learn about the local culture and values.

Security

On-campus accommodation can mean added security for students. Most universities follow a set of guidelines that help international students live in a secure environment. Students are awarded IDs and activated they place key locks outside their rooms. Also, there are security cameras installed to monitor people coming in or going out of campus.

Benefits of living off-campus

Living off-campus not only gives you personal space but also helps you gain valuable life experiences

There are many reasons why some people prefer off-campus residence:

Personal Liberty

For students, living off-campus often means having independence. They learn to become self-reliant and fast-track into maturity and adulthood. It also gives you the opportunity to interact with more mature people and can be helpful in understanding the local community beyond the college premises.

Availability

While some universities do offer dorms to their students; many universities don’t have such facilities. Moreover, some dorms are not well-maintained neither are they suitable for your needs. Students living off-campus also don’t have to deal with inconveniences like having to share bathrooms with several people or waiting in line to use the laundry.

Space and Privacy

A college dorm can be a vibrant place but it can also get really crowded and rob your inherent need for peace and privacy. It can be difficult to concentrate and focus on studies. Off-campus accommodations provide an environment where you can dedicate your focus to things that matter to you.

The final verdict

Which option you choose in the on-campus vs off-campus debate depends on what you seek most in a residence.
