Why is Duke called ‘The Harvard of the South’?

The Duke University of Durham, formally founded in 1924, is a regional powerhouse, competitive with the Ivies and the Atlantic Coast Conference Division, particularly with its arch-rival, UNC-Chapel Hill, another top 10 Southern schools. Duke is also the only university in the South to finish in the top 10 overall.
The rankings of Duke University are off the charts. Every educational magazine consistently ranks the university among the top national universities.
In 2013, Forbes ranked Duke University 4th in the US for its high Return On Investment programs.
Because of all these factors, Duke University has earned the title ‘The Harvard of the South'.
