At the University of Toronto, examinations and teaching are usually conducted in English since the degree programs require a high level of skill in the English language.
Unless you qualify for an exception, you must submit evidence of appropriate English proficiency if English is not your first language.
If you meet one of the following criteria, you stand a chance to be excluded from the program:
You are completing or are completing four or more years of full-time degree in an English-taught Canadian school.
You have completed or are completing four or more years of a full-time degree at an English language school in the US.
You have at least four or more years of full-time education in a Canadian school or if French is your native language.
You can study in European nations without taking the IELTS or TOEFL if you can prove your English language proficiency by showing:
You have spent the last five years of your education studying English and English as your first language at IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) or O level (Ordinary Level).
You've demonstrated that you're a skilled communicator and that your previous schooling was in English.
You apply to study at the same university where you received your first degree.
You've earned a degree that was entirely taught in English.
If you have a bachelor's degree in English as the medium of instruction or if English is your first language, you won't usually require a TOEFL or IELTS score. Some institutions just request a letter from the student's former educational institution to determine English Language Proficiency.
Some courses, however, may not require English language skills, while others do. For example, to qualify for courses in English Philology, you must pass an English language test.
Malaysia is an option if you wish to study overseas without taking the IELTS exam. After Singapore, Malaysia is one of Asia's most popular study destinations. There is no requirement for English test evidence for Bachelor's, Master's, and Ph.D. programs. English is the primary medium of teaching in over 80% of Malaysian universities.
Most colleges do not specify clearly that a language examination result (IELTS/TOEFL/PTE/CAE, etc.) is not required. You should contact the institution directly, either by email or phone, to see if you are qualified to be excluded from the language competency exam requirement.
