Founded in 1865, the University of Melbourne is known for being one of Australia's six sandstone institutions and a member of the Group of Eight, Universities 21, the Association of Pacific Rim Universities, and Washington University's McDonnell International Scholars Academy. The University of Melbourne is the second oldest university in Australia and the oldest in the state of Victoria.

The university comprises ten faculties -  architecture, building and planning, arts, business and economics, education, engineering, fine arts and music, law, medicine, dentistry and health sciences, science, and veterinary and agricultural sciences. The campus is home to several museums and art galleries, including medical history, zoological specimens, contemporary art dental collection, and anatomy & pathology.

Located in Melbourne, Australia, the main campus of the University of Melbourne is in Parkville, a suburb north of Melbourne's central business district. The University of Melbourne has three other campuses in metropolitan Melbourne at Burnley, Southbank, and Werribee. The Burnley campus is known for its horticultural courses. 

The University of Melbourne offers 11 separate academic institutions, including research institutes like Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, Walter and Eliza Institute of Medical Research, and Grattan Institute.
