Established in 1991 by then-Florida governor Lawton Chiles, Florida Gulf Coast University held their first classes in 1997 after solidifying a campus location in the beach town of Fort Myers. FGCU obtained national fame during the 2013 NCAA Division I Mens Basketball tournament by reaching the Sweet Sixteen after upsetting several teams as a 15-seed, and earning the nickname Dunk City.
