You will only receive one Test Report Form (TRF), which will serve as the result. The TRF shows your overall band as well as your reading, listening, writing, and speaking scores for each of the four areas. All five scores are displayed on a nine-band scale.
You will receive IELTS scores on a scale of 1 to 9 for each of the four areas after your IELTS exam is over. You will also receive a band score overall.
If you have taken an IELTS on the paper test, your Test Report Form will be available 13 days after you complete the test.
If you have taken an IELTS computer test, your results will be available three to five days after your test.
To get the IELTS score, subtract the mean (average) of the results from all four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. This is equivalent to the sum of all the scores multiplied by four. If the average contains a decimal point, it will be rounded to the next half or whole band.
If the average is.25, for example, it is rounded up to the nearest half band. As a result, if the average score is 6.25, they will receive a score of 6.5 as a final result. If the average is.75, it will be rounded up to the next whole band. As a result, a band of 6.75 will yield a final score of 7.
See below the scoring pattern to understand how the IELTS score is calculated.
Band 9 | Expert user | Comprehensive understanding and command of the language |
Band 8 | Very good user
| Complete operational command over the language with only slight inaccuracies occasionally. |
Band 7 | Good user | Operational command over the language, but with occasional mistakes and inaccuracies in situations. |
Band 6 | Competent user | Understands the language at a complex level and can express it but only in familiar situations. |
Band 5: | Modest user | Partial command over language although struggles overall and makes mistakes |
Band 4 | Limited user | Not used to complex language and have issues understanding and expressing. |
Band 3 | Extremely limited user | Regular breakdowns in communication and understands and conveys only general terms. |
Band 2 | Intermittent user | Struggles hard in understanding written and spoken English. |
