Established in 1824 as the Manchester Mechanics Institute, the University of Manchester is a public research university in the United Kingdom. It was formed by the Victoria University of Manchester and the Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST). Manchester University is one of the only six red brick universities in England, a term designated to the best universities in the country.
