The University of Northampton was established as Nene College in 1975, an amalgamation of the College of Education, College of Technology and College of Art.​ In 2005, the University of Northampton was awarded full university status and research degree awarding powers. In 2012, the university was the first university in the UK to be named a Changemaker Campus, particularly for its social impact. 

The University of Northampton offers various academic programs, including Bachelor's, Master's, distance education, joint honours degree, foundation degrees, and complete research-based degrees upto PhD levels across its four faculties - The Faculty of Business & Law, The Faculty of Arts, Science & Technology, The Faculty of Health & Society, and The Faculty of Education & Humanities. The University of Northampton has a gold award in the Teaching Excellence Framework.

The University of Northampton developed a new Waterside Campus in 2018, which replaced its former Avenue and Park campuses. The older campuses are used as residence halls for students, with around 16,000 rooms equipped with all basic requirements. 

The University of Northampton is built around an inclusive culture focusing on diversity, inclusion, and equitable learning opportunities. Its network of like-minded individuals who can support each other no matter where they are has helped make the world a much better place to live in.
