The Georgia Institute of Technology was established in 1885 as part of reconstruction's aspirations to develop an industrial economy in the Southern United States. Initially, it exclusively offered a mechanical engineering degree. The Georgia Institute of Technology is divided into six colleges and includes approximately 31 departments/units focusing on science and technology. It is well-known for its computer science and engineering degree programs.

The Georgia Institute of Technology campus is located in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, and spans 400 acres in the city's central business district. Forbes magazine named the university's Advanced Technology Development Center (ATDC) one of the top 12 company incubators. One part of the Georgia Institute of Technology has the Technology Square Research Building (TSRB), which holds faculty and graduate student offices for the College of Computing and the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. It also has a GVU Centre, a multidisciplinary technology research centre. There are also 43 sporting clubs in the city. 

Georgia Institute of Technology produces more women engineers than any other institution in the nation. Georgia Institute of Technology has produced many notable alumni, including Retired Vice Admiral Richard H. Truly, the eighth administrator of NASA, and John Young. They walked on the moon as the commanders of Apollo 16.
