Established in 1867, Howard University provides 140 undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees. The National Science Foundation has ranked Howard as the top producer of African-American undergraduates who later earn science and engineering doctoral degrees. The university operates with the motto “Veritas et Utilitas,” meaning “Truth and Service.” 

Howard University has given more than 130,000 degrees in the arts, sciences, and humanities. The historic main campus is located on a hilltop in Northwest Washington, just blocks away from U Street and the Howard Theatre. It offers Medical Physics (M.S.), Undergraduate Programs, Graduate Programs, Doctorate Programs, and Professional Programs. The Howard University Health Sciences department includes the Howard University Hospital, Colleges of Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Nursing and Allied Health Sciences.

Howard University is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Located in Washington, D.C., Howard University offers professional options in the public and private sectors, and Howard's links to both sectors are unequalled. Significant improvements and additions like the Carnegie building were built after World War 2.  

Howard University has produced many notable alumni, including one Schwarzman scholar, three Marshall Scholars, and four Rhodes scholars. It also has 12 Truman scholars, 25 Pickering fellows, and more than 165 Fulbright recipients. Some notable alumni include Chadwick Boseman, an American actor; Kamala Harris, Vice President of the United States and Taraji P. Henson, an American actress.
