The official certificate of incorporation for the University of Chicago was issued by the state of Illinois in September 1890, marking the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the university. Oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller's $600,000 donation and Marshall Field's donation of property helped the university get off the ground. The first classes were held in 1892 with 594 students and 120 faculty members, since then, the University of Chicago is one of America’s top universities, and holds top-ten positions in various national and international rankings. This university’s vision has been at the core of Chicago’s existence, enshrined in its motto: “Crescat scientia; vita excolatur”, which translates to “Let knowledge grow from more to more; and so be human life enriched”. The University of Chicago has its main campus on Chicago's South Side and seven international campuses and centers throughout the world. The University of Chicago has 7 professional schools - Chicago Booth School of Business, Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice, Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies, Harris School of Public Policy, Law School, Pritzker School of Medicine, and Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering. The university also has 4 divisions - Biological Sciences Division, Humanities Division, Physical Sciences Division, and Social Sciences Division. 97 Nobel Laureates are associated with the University of Chicago. Some of the Nobel winners whose work is closely associated with the University are Milton Friedman (Economics, 1976), Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar (Physics, 1983), Saul Bellow (Literature, 1976), and Willard Libby (Chemistry, 1960). Notable alumni of Chicago include Edwin Hubble (Astronomer), Satya Nadela (CEO of Microsoft), Bernie Sanders (United States Senator), Larry Ellison (Founder of Oracle Corporation), and many more.

About
Anthropology and sociology have long served as core disciplines of the social sciences, and social scientific work on religion has been foundational for current theorizations of culture, society, personhood, language, knowledge and economy. Promoting critical inquiry of what is regarded as 'religion', anthropologists and sociologists are attendant to the categories and politics of analysis, beginning from the everyday contexts of discourse and practice that make collective institutions and competing horizons of authority possible.
