Founded in 1850, as a public institution of higher education, the University of Sydney is based on the principles of providing the opportunity to students to realize their potential through education and it still holds that belief just as strongly today. The university is consistently ranked among the world’s top 50 universities. It is one of the 6 sandstone universities in Australia. The University of Sydney is a member of CEMS, the Group of Eight, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities. The university’s motto is, 'Sidere mens eadem mutato' which has had many translations throughout history; "The stars change, the mind remains the same", "The constellation is changed, the disposition is the same" and "The same learning under new stars".

The main campus of the university is called Camper down Campus which is located in Australia. It was constructed by Edmund Blacket in Neo-Gothic design and is known to be among the world's most beautiful universities. The university has other campuses and research facilities in Sydney and other areas of Australia. One of the additional sites is the One Tree Island Research Station located near the Great Barrier Reef, which facilitates research on topics such as climate change and geology.

The University of Sydney is ranked 1st in Australia and 4th in the world for graduate employability. Students have the choice of selecting from Australia's widest range of programmes and disciplines. Offering over 400 study areas to select from, the university has five subjects that are ranked in the top ten in the world, with an additional 28 disciplines ranked amongst the top 50 in the world. The University of Sydney includes - Faculty of Arts & Social Science, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Medicine & Health, Faculty of Science, School of Architecture, Design & Planning, University of Sydney Business School, Sydney Law School and Conservatorium of Music.
