The Université de Montréal (French for the University of Montreal) is a french language public research-based university in Montreal, Quebec, CA. Established in 1878, the university started with 3 faculties, theology, law and medicine. A fourth faculty, the Faculty of Arts, was established in 1887 and, The École Polytechnique de Montréal, which was created in 1873, was merged with Université Laval à Montréal in the same year. In 1943, the university left its old campus, which was situated in Latin Quartier and moved to new premises on Mount Royal, which was designed by well-known Canadian architect Ernest Cormier.
The 13 faculties of education cover a broad spectrum of fields of knowledge, from music to health to humanities and everything in between. The two affiliate schools - The Polytechnique Montreal (Engineering School) and HEC Montreal (Bussines School), combined the university offers more than 600 programs for undergraduates and post-graduate students, as well as 71 doctoral programs. The primary language of instruction at the University of Montreal is French, however, several graduate programs accept English-speaking students.
Every year, the University of Montreal receives approximately $500 million for research purposes, making it one of Canada’s top research university hubs. MILA, the world’s leading university research centre in deep learning, IRIC, the Institute for Research in Immunology and Cancer, and CRDP, the Centre de recherche en droit public, the most comprehensive public law research centre in Canada, all these renowned laboratories were born in the University of Montreal.
The university’s main campus is situated in Mount Royal, the campus is spread across 65 hectares of lush greenery, roads and paths. The University of Montreal offers various extracurricular activities like Arts & Culture which include, music, film, dance, theatre and visual arts. Sports include hockey, rock climbing, swimming and football. The University of Montreal is also home to some notable alumni including, Pierre Elliot Trudeau (former Prime Minister of Canada), Calin Rovinescu (former CEO of Air Canada), and Patrice Desilets (Game designer).
