Ohio State University was founded in 1870. It was known for its agricultural and mechanical specialties and was transformed into a comprehensive university under the leadership of then-Governor  Rutherford B. Hayes.

The university includes campuses in Newark, Mansfield, Lima, Wooster, Marion, and Columbus. The main campus in Columbus has grown into the third-largest university campus in the United States, with nearly 50,000 undergraduate students and nearly 15,000 graduate students. Four buildings on campus are listed on the National Register of Historic Places - Hale Hall, Hayes Hall, Ohio Stadium, and Orton Hall. The campus is surrounded by more than 10 museums and galleries.

The eight departments at Ohio State University that offer bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees are Applied Science, Arts and Social Sciences, Beedie School of Business, Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Environment, Faculty of Health Sciences, and Faculty of Science.


Ohio State University has many distinguished graduates, including Roy Lichtenstein (artist), George Steinbrenner (former owner of the New York Yankees), Larry Sanger (founder of Wikipedia), James S. Albus (the Hero of American Manufacturing), and Jack Niklaus (world-famous golfer).
