Various institutes are available when applying for a scholarship to study in Germany, allowing overseas students to study in German universities and colleges. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the largest funder of academic exchanges globally and has an extensive database of scholarship providers.

Table of Contents

1 Scholarships from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

The DAAD provides financial support to international students, graduates, doctoral candidates, and young scientists who have achieved academic excellence. People willing to take on social duty might earn bonus points during the interview process.

The DAAD provides information and advice to international students in their home countries through its global branch offices, information centers, and education fairs.

The organizations offering scholarships include political-party-affiliated institutions like the Friedrich Ebert and Konrad Adenauer Foundations and church-affiliated scholarships like the German Industrial Foundation.

Scholarship recipients can contribute their thoughts outside of their studies through seminars, workshops, and independent projects, forming valuable networks in the process. Of course, many other smaller organizations and German institutions and colleges grant scholarships, the majority of which also give the Deutschlandstipendium (scholarship from the National Scholarship Programme).

2 Eligibility

  • Graduate and doctoral students are the primary beneficiaries of DAAD scholarships.

  • International students who wish to pursue a full-time course in Germany that requires in-person attendance are eligible for DAAD scholarships.

  • You should have finished your Bachelor's degree.

  • You can still apply if you are pursuing your Bachelor's degree at the time of scholarship application, but you must have finished it by the time the financial aid is given.

  • You can also apply if you are currently enrolled in the first year of a two-year study in Germany.

  • The language requirements vary per program, but a minimum IELTS band score of 6 or a TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based), or 80 (internet-based) is required for a DAAD scholarship.

  • Your university's medium of instruction certificate may be accepted in some situations instead of an IELTS or TOEFL score.

3 How to apply

  • Depending on the scholarship program you are looking for, the scholarship application process will differ.

  • You must first create an account on the DAAD website (www.funding-guide.de) to apply online.

  • The Application Procedure section of the scholarship database portal will walk you through the scholarship application process.

  • Choose the scholarship program for which you want to apply.

  • Select Submit Application from the drop-down menu.
