To secure admission to universities in Germany, international students must deal with a variety of procedures. The most critical step is to register with the local registration office; you won't be able to create a bank account until you've done so.

Along with the processes mentioned below, the following administrative procedures must be completed:

1 Registration certificate

You must go to the Einwohnermeldeamt (residents' registration office) within two weeks of finding a room or an apartment in Germany.

Anyone who moves into a new home in Germany must register or update their information (if they move to a new address in the same city). You will receive a registration certificate once you have completed the registration process. It verifies that you are officially residing at a specific address by confirming that you are registered there.

A registration certificate is required when establishing a bank account, applying for a library card, or applying for a parking permit. To register, you will need the following documents:

Your landlord's tenant agreement or proof indicating you have moved in at a particular residence.
ID card or passport, with visa if needed.

Additional papers, such as your matriculation certificate, may be required in some instances.

The University authorities will be able to advise you on the documents you will require to secure admission. They will also provide you with the location of your local registration office. In German metropolitan cities, there are multiple Bürgerämter or administrative offices for citizens; you will often need to travel to the office in your district.

2 Residence permit

A residency permit is not required for students from the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland. When students register with the residents' registration office, they obtain a certificate proving their right to dwell in Germany. They may also be required to show that they have health insurance and can afford to pay for their education.

You must report to the Ausländerbehörde (foreigners' office) and apply for a residence permit if you are not from one of the countries mentioned above. This document, like a visa, is related to a specific desired term of study.

If international students have been accepted to a higher education institution, they must obtain a residence permit to study. Otherwise, they must apply for a residence visa to apply for a spot in the university.

3 Setting up a bank account

4 A driver’s license

For stays of up to six months in Germany, students must have a foreign driver's license. You may require a translation into German or an international driver's license.
