About

Established in 1912, Rice University is known for Canada's national particle and nuclear physics laboratory, which houses the world's largest cyclotron, and Bamfield Marine Station, a major center for teaching and research in marine biology. Rice University has produced many notable alumni, including former Mayor of Houston Annise Parker, U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, former U.S. Secretary of State James Baker, Nobel Prize winners Richard Smalley and Robert Curl, and NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson.

Situated in Houston, Texas, USA, Rice's campus is in Houston's museum district, located close to the city of West University Place. It is a heavily wooded 285-acre area of land. The first women's residence on the Rice campus was Jones College, followed by Brown College. New residential colleges such as Lovett College, Sid Richardson College, and Martel College were erected on campus to accommodate the university's development.

The Wiess School of Natural Sciences, the George R. Brown School of Engineering, the School of Social Sciences, the School of Architecture, the Shepherd School of Music, and the School of Humanities are among Rice University's eleven residential colleges and eight academic schools. Rice's undergraduate program provides over fifty majors and two dozen minors, giving students many options for pursuing multiple degrees.
