Situated in Coral Gables, Florida, the University of Miami is a private research university established in 1925. The first building, known as the Merrick Building after George Merrick, who gave the university $5 million in its first year, was left unfinished for more than two decades because of economic difficulties – with classes run instead at a nearby hotel, giving the university the early nickname of “Cardboard College”.
The University's 12 schools and colleges serve undergraduate and graduate students in more than 180 majors and programs. The 12 schools and colleges are the School of Architecture, School of Arts and Sciences, Miami Herbert Business School, School of Communication, School of Education & Human Development, College of Engineering, School of Law, the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science, Miller School of Medicine, Frost School of Music, School of Nursing and Health Studies, and the Graduate School.
The University of Miami has three campuses - Coral Gables Campus, Medical Campus and Marine Campus. The Coral Gables Campus is the main campus and houses a theatre, arboretum and architecture centre, a large pool named “Lake Osceola”, and Lowe Art Museum. The School of Medicine and the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science have separate campuses in Miami.
Notable alumni of the University of Miami include wrestler Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, actor Sylvester Stallone, singer Gloria Estefan and David Nutter, Director of Game of Thrones and Emmy Award Winner. Former president Donna E. Shalala led the University of Miami between 2001 and 2016 and served under President Bill Clinton as the longest-serving US Secretary of Health and Human Services.
