The Rhodes Scholarship is the University’s oldest international scholarship programme and offers two-year scholarships (renewable for a third year) available to applicants to Oxford from a number of countries around the world.

Scholarship amount details

A Rhodes Scholarship covers All University and College fees; the University application fee; a living stipend (£16,218 per annum 2020-21); one economy class airfare to Oxford at the start of the scholarship and one economy flight back to the student’s home country at the conclusion of the scholarship.

Appication Process for this scholarship

  • Birth certificate confirming that applicant meets the age criterion;
  • A copy of a valid passport (with translation, if necessary), confirming that applicant meets the citizenship criteria
  • An official transcript from the university at which applicant is studying, or have studied, showing grades achieved
  • If applicants are neither a graduate of a university in India nor in the final year of undergraduate study at a university in India, they must provide evidence of formal study at an educational institution in India for at least 4 of the last 10 years as of the date of application and completion of a school leaving exam at a school in India (10th or 12th grade)
  • CV: It should include details about prizes, scholarships, positions of leadership, involvement in student, voluntary, community or political activities and any cultural, musical or sporting accomplishments This should not exceed two A4 (12pt) pages in length
  • A head-and-shoulders colour photograph (jpg format)
  • A signed personal statement of no more than 1,000 words which:
    • Addresses applicants general interests and activities and what he/she plan to do with their life once they have completed their studies
    • Discusses applicant’s aims and priorities and the contribution they had made and would like to make to their home country and the region
    • Indicates the course of study and degree they wish to follow at Oxford
    • Demonstrates that applicants are able to meet the requirements of the specific course they have chosen
  • LOR: Applicants will need to provide a list of six people (referees), who are willing to submit references on their behalf:
    • Provide email addresses of all the referees
    • At least three of the referees should be academics who had taught the candidate in undergraduate studies and who can comment in detail on their academic ability and how well they think the candidate would fare at Oxford
    • Additional referees should testify to applicants character and/or his/ her involvement in extra-curricular/service or leadership activities These referees should be teachers or other persons who are able to comment critically on whether the candidate fulfills the extra-curricular, non-academic requirements of the Scholarship and who can speak in detail to their character
    • Referees must not be personal friends, relations, or contemporaries

Scholarship Eligibility

  • As a minimum, applicants should hold or be predicted to achieve the equivalent of the following UK qualifications:
    • A first-class or a very strong upper second-class undergraduate degree with honors in law
  • Applicants from India should hold:
    • A professional bachelor’s degree (4 years) from a recognized institution with an overall grade of 65% for degrees awarded by prestigious institutions (eg, Institutions of National Importance), or 75% for degrees awarded by other institutions; or 3.5 out of 4.0, 5.5 out of 7.0, 6.5 out of 8.0, or 8.5 out of 10.0
    • A standard bachelor’s degree (3 years) from a recognized institution with an overall grade of 70% for degrees awarded by prestigious institutions (eg, Institutions of National Importance), or 75% for degrees awarded by other institutions
  • Equivalent qualifications may include a master’s in law or a postgraduate diploma in law or other law professional equivalent
  • Other qualifications, evidence of excellence, and relevant experience:
    • Work experience in a relevant field may be an advantage but is not a requirement
    • The longer it is since you have been in full-time education, the more attention will be paid to any relevant professional experience
    • Publications are not expected
    • They may, in certain circumstances, advantage an application but it is appreciated that the opportunity to publish may vary considerably depending on factors such as the stage the student has reached in their academic career and the structure of the course(s) they have studied
  • English Language Requirements:
    • TOEFL: Overall 110, with Listening: 22, Reading: 24, Speaking: 25, Writing: 24
    • IELTS: Overall 7.5, with 7.0 in each component
    • Applicants may apply for a waiver if they have completed, or are currently completing, a degree-level course that is:
      • Full-time at least nine months in duration
      • Undertaken at a recognized institution where teaching and assessment throughout the course is undertaken entirely in English; and
      • Has been completed within 2 years of the start date of the course to which you are applying
