Ohio University is a public, coeducational institution of higher learning in Athens, Ohio. The University opened in 1808 with one building, three students, and one professor, Jacob Lindley. One of the first two graduates of the University, Thomas Ewing, later became a US senator and distinguished himself as a cabinet member or advisor to four US presidents. The university’s motto is “Prae Omnibus Virtus,” which means Virtue Before All Things

Ohio University has its residential campus located in Athens and 5 regional campuses in Chillicothe, Eastern, Lancaster, Southern, and Zanesville. The university’s campus has been ranked in the Top 50 safest campuses and features facilities such as art galleries, including the Kennedy Museum of Art, the University Art Gallery, Trisolini Gallery, Cube 4 Gallery, and an on-campus movie theatre.

The university has Research facilities in Athens, which include Edwards Accelerator Laboratory, the Center for Geotechnical and Environmental Research, and the Institute for Local Government Administration and Rural Development. Ohio University has been awarded the designation of “R1 Doctoral University - Very High Research Activity” by the Carnegie Classification of Institution.
