The University of Illinois was structured in 1867 and is referred to as a "Public Ivy" in Howard and Matthew Greene's book The Public Ivies: America's Flagship Public Universities (2001). At the University of Illinois, 87% of full-time academics have a PhD or equivalent degree, while 76% of tenured faculty teach undergraduate courses. The University of Illinois has 16 schools and colleges and offers more than 150 undergraduate and over 100 graduate programs of study. 


The university’s libraries hold one of the biggest public library collections in the US, with around 13 million volumes across nearly 40 library sites. Located in Chicago, Illinois, the United States of America, The University of Illinois' principal research and academic facilities are split approximately evenly between the twin cities of Urbana and Champaign, which are part of the Champaign–Urbana metropolitan area. Students stay in the residence halls on the south side of campus like James Stukel Towers, Marie Robinson Hall, and Thomas Beckham Hall.
