The University of Michigan was established in the year 1817, before Michigan had even become an official state, and moved from Detroit to what is now its central campus in Ann Arbor in 1837. By 1866, the University of Michigan had become the largest in the country and was one of the foremost research-intensive universities in the United States. 

The university offers around 250 undergraduate programs, 200 master’s programs, and around 100 doctoral programs across its nineteen colleges. The University of Michigan consists of nine professional institutions - the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Ross School of Business, Medical School, Law School, Ford School of Public Policy, College of Pharmacy, School of Social Work, School of Public Health, and School of Dentistry.

Research is one of the major strengths of the university since it was one of the foremost and most impactful research institutions in the U.S. In F.Y. 2021, the university’s total expenditure on research and development expenditure was $1.58 Billion, and the university reported 502 new inventions, 23 start-ups and generated over $40 Million in revenue. 

Some notable alumni of the University of Michigan include Gerald Ford (former U.S. president), Larry Page (Co-founder of Google), and James Earl Jones (Actor and the voice of Darth Vader).

The acceptance rate for the University of Michigan is 48%. You need to be in the top 10% of your class. And most of your classes should be AP or honors classes. The average SAT and ACT score required is 1350 and 30s, respectively. The university also pays attention to what you do outside of classrooms. An excellent place to start is holding a leadership role in an area of your interest. Your teacher recommendations will be important differentiators. Additionally, don't skimp on your written solutions to the interview questions it poses to candidates. The admissions committee will read what you submit, so ensure it is error-free, concise, and clear.

According to academic peer reviews of universities, Michigan is generally considered among the top 15 US universities at the undergraduate level and the top 10 at the graduate level. Michigan’s undergraduate Business and Engineering programs are consistently ranked among the top 5 or 6 in the country. Major Wall Street firms, such as Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Citi, Deutsche etc. combined, recruit dozens of undergraduate students for front office jobs annually

The University of Michigan has made its name over the years, and comparing it to an Ivy League university wouldn’t do justice. Ivy League universities are in a different league altogether.
