Scholarship Overview

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship programme was established in October 2000 by a donation of US$210m from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the University of Cambridge; this is the largest ever single donation to a UK university. Each year Gates Cambridge offers c.80 full-cost scholarships to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK to pursue a postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge.

  • Master of Philosophy in Engineering for Sustainable Development
  • Courses Eligible for Scholarship
  • PhD (three-year research-only degree)
  • Master of Science or MLitt (two-year research-only degree)
  • One year postgraduate course (eg MPhil, LLM, MASt, Diploma, Master of Business Administration etc)

 

Scholarship amount details

  • Max scholarship per student: Pound 66,035 => Rs 69,89,805
  • Conversion rate used: 1 Pound = Rs. 105.85 (last updated 9th January 2024)
  • Scholarship amount will be given: One Time

  • Scholarship covers:
    • the University Composition Fee at the appropriate rate
    • £18,384 of a maintenance allowance for a single student
    • one economy single airfare at both the beginning and end of the course
    • inbound visa costs & the cost of the Immigration Health Surcharge
  • The Trust also considers applications for several types of additional funding on a discretionary basis:
    • Academic development funding – from up to £500 to up to £2,000, dependent on the length of your course, to attend conferences and courses
    • Family allowance – currently up to £10,420 for one child and up to £14,870 for two or more children (2022-23 rate tbc). No funding is provided for a partner
    • Fieldwork – you may apply to keep up to your normal maintenance allowance while on fieldwork as part of your PhD (the Trust does not fund other fieldwork costs as these should be funded by the University Composition Fee)
    • Maternity/Paternity funding – should you require it, you may apply to intermit your studies for up to 6 months and continue to receive your maintenance allowance during this time
    • Hardship funding – for unforeseen difficulties facing the scholar

Scholarship Eligibility

  • The selection criteria are outstanding intellectual ability, leadership potential, a commitment to improving the lives of others, a good fit between the applicant’s qualifications and aspirations and the postgraduate programme at Cambridge for which they are applying
  • Applicant must be a citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom
  • Applicant must be applying to pursue full-time residential course of study at the University of Cambridge
  • Bachelor: Professional Bachelor (4 years) when awarded from a top institution (BEng; BTech; MBBS) with a grade of 70% Bachelor of Law (3 years) with a grade of 70% Bachelor of Arts (3 years) (From University of Delhi and Mumbai) with a grade of 70% or Masters with a Pass
  • IELTS: 70 with no score less than 70 in each section
  • Interview: Candidates will be invited for a 20-25 minute interview and, depending on where you are, you can either attend in person or choose to be interviewed by Skype
  • Each interview has four main sections:
  • 1 Welcome and introduction: The Chair will introduce the panel, set out the format of the interview, and provide any other essential information to allow for a productive session
