Scholarship Overview

This fellowship was created in 1988 by the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation and Richard L. Menschel (MBA 1959) to encourage students from the nonprofit sector to pursue an MBA at HBS. Mr. Menschel, a former director of the Foundation and Limited Partner, Goldman Sachs, was an early supporter of the HBS Social Enterprise Initiative and served on its Advisory Board.

Appication Process for this scholarship

  • LOR: Two recommendations are required
    • Recommenders will be asked to fill out a personal qualities and skills grid and answer two additional questions
    • The recommendation form includes the following questions, along with other types of questions:
      • How do the candidate’s performance, potential, background, or personal qualities compare to those of other well-qualified individuals in similar roles? Please provide specific examples (300 words)
      • Please describe the most important piece of constructive feedback you have given the applicant Please detail the circumstances and the applicant’s response (250 words)

  • In an effort to create a network of individuals committed to working in the nonprofit sector, recipients are invited to participate in events with current and former recipients, as well as local nonprofit leaders.

Scholarship Eligibility

Applicant must have served in full-time leadership roles in the nonprofit or public sector prior to enrolling at HBS and demonstrate a strong commitment to a career in the sector

  • Bachelor: Applicant is required to hold a college or university degree equivalent to a four-year American baccalaureate degree
  • Equivalent degrees include international three-year bachelor degree programs
  • TOEFL: HBS does not have a minimum test score to apply, however, MBA Admissions Board discourages any candidate with a TOEFL score lower than 109 for applying
  • IELTS: HBS does not have a minimum test score to apply, however, the MBA Admissions Board discourages any candidate with an IELTS score lower than 75 from applying
  • PTE: HBS does not have a minimum test score to apply, however, the MBA Admissions Board discourages any candidate with a PTE score lower than 75 from applying
  • GMAT/ GRE: Scores are required
  • Work Experience: The program is designed for students who have full-time work experience before matriculation
  • Interview: It is part of the admission process
  • The applicant may be invited to interview after their written application has been submitted and reviewed
  • Interviews may be scheduled on campus, in domestic or international hub cities, or via Skype
  • Interviews are 30 minutes and are conducted by an MBA Admissions Board member who has reviewed the student’s application
