Scholarship Overview

Horace W. Goldsmith Fellowship fellowship was created in 1988 by the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation and Richard L. Menschel (MBA 1959). Mr. Menschel, is a former director of the Foundation and Limited Partner, Goldman Sachs. He was an early supporter of the HBS Social Enterprise Initiative and served on its Advisory Board.

The scholarship aims to encourage students from the nonprofit sector to pursue the Master of Business Administration at Harvard Business School

  • Letter Of Recommendation: Two recommendations are required. Recommenders will be asked to fill out a personal qualities and skills grid and answer two additional questions
  • The recommendation form includes the following questions, along with other types of questions
    • How do the candidate’s performance, potential, background, or personal qualities compare to those of other well-qualified individuals in similar roles? Please provide specific examples. (300 words)
    • Please describe the most important piece of constructive feedback you have given the applicant. Please detail the circumstances and the applicant’s response. (250 words)
  • Essay: Students need to answer the following question:
    • As we review your application, what more would you like us to know as we consider your candidacy for the Harvard Business School MBA program?
  • There is no word limit for the question. Student must write the answer in clear language
    • CV: A current business resume uploaded through the university’s online application system. This can be student’s standard business resume or CV. They do not need to have it in any special format

Scholarship Eligibility

    • Applicant must have served in full-time leadership roles in the nonprofit or public sector prior to enrolling at HBS and demonstrate a strong commitment to a career in the sector
    • Applicant is required to hold a college or university degree equivalent to a four-year American baccalaureate degree Equivalent degrees include international three-year bachelor degree programs
    • The program is designed for students who have full-time work experience before matriculation
    • Applicant must have served in full-time leadership roles in the nonprofit or public sector prior to enrolling at HBS and demonstrate a strong commitment to a career in the sector
    • Applicant is required to hold a college or university degree equivalent to a four-year American baccalaureate degree Equivalent degrees include international three-year bachelor degree programs
    • The program is designed for students who have full-time work experience before matriculation
    • Interview is part of the admission process. The applicant may be invited to interview after their written application has been submitted and reviewed
    • Interviews may be scheduled on campus, in domestic or international hub cities, or via Skype
    • Interviews are 30 minutes and are conducted by an MBA Admissions Board member who has reviewed the student’s application
