Scholarship Overview

The Scholarship programme consists of both the High Potential Scholarship (funded by the Maastricht University Scholarship Fund), and the NL Scholarship, which is financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science in conjunction with Dutch universities and universities of applied sciences. It is aimed at international students from outside the EU/EEA who wish to follow a full degree programme in the Netherlands.

Appication Process for this scholarship

  • Curriculum vitae (CV) should be up-to-date, containing relevant information about education and (job) experience, and not longer than 2 A4 pages
  • Letter of Recommendation:
    • The contact details of the referee
    • Ensure the referee’s relationship to the applicant is indicated (eg, professor, thesis supervisor, employer)
    • Provide the telephone number of the referee with the applicable country calling code
    • Include the referee’s work email address (preferred)
  • Letter of Motivation:
    • Should be up-to-date, tailored specifically to this Scholarship program, and no longer than 1 A4 page
    • Argue why this scholarship is important, why the applicant should be selected, and describe the applicant’s role as an ambassador of Maastricht University during their scholarship period and in the upcoming years after finishing their studies at UM
  • Proof of Academic Excellence:
    • University transcript that explicitly states grade point average or class ranking for the entire study program; or,
    • A letter signed by the institution’s Head of Department or Registrar stating that the applicant is one of the top 20 students in the graduating year of their study program
    • Ensure the letter contains the contact details of the Head of Department or Registrar

Scholarship Eligibility

  • Applicants must hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant domain Relevant domains are: Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Biomedical Technology, Health Sciences (Biology and Health), Life Sciences, (Veterinary) Medicine, University College (depending on courses followed, > 50% biology)
  • GRE with a minimum score of 144 in Verbal reasoning, 144 in Quantitative reasoning, and 30 in Analytical writing
  • Applicants must:
    • Hold nationality in a country outside the EU/EEA, Switzerland, or Surinam and meet the requirements for obtaining an entry visa and residence permit for the Netherlands
    • Have applied for admission to a full-time Master’s program at Maastricht University
    • Have never participated in a degree-seeking higher education program, a primary education program, or secondary education program in the Netherlands Students who completed exchange programs in the Netherlands are welcome to apply
    • Not be over 35 years of age on 1 September 2021
    • Have obtained excellent results during prior education programs, as demonstrated by the latest grade transcript or certified by academic excellence If several applicants are equally qualified, the University will give preference to applicants whose academic transcript or certified letter of academic excellence demonstrate that they are among the top 5% of the 2021/22 scholarship program applicants
