Scholarship Overview

Since 1975, the Ontario government, in partnership with Ontario’s publicly assisted universities, has encouraged excellence in graduate studies at the master’s and doctoral levels through the awarding of Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS).
OGS awards are merit-based scholarships available to students in all disciplines of graduate study.

Scholarship amount details

  • 15,000 CAD for one year (3 consecutive terms)
  • $5,000 per term for a maximum of three consecutive terms
  • The Ontario Government (MCU) provides two-thirds of the total value of the award ($3,333.33 per term) and the remaining one-third ($1,666.67 per term) is provided through private donations to Western

Conversion rate used: 1 CAD = Rs. 61.33 (last updated 7th December 2023).

Scholarship Eligibility

  • The applicant seeking Master’s support for a 3-term or 4-term Master’s program will not have completed any time in the program as of January 1 (for Master of Media in Journalism & Communication)
  • The applicant seeking Master’s support for a 5-term Master’s program must be in term 2 or less as of January 1 (For MS in Psychology)
  • Applicant must have achieved a minimum of 80% in each of the last two completed years of full-time study, or equivalent to full-time study
  • Eligibility averages for competitive scholarship are rounded ONLY to the nearest decimal place
  • Also, an OGS applicant:
    • Must not have exceeded the lifetime maximum of two (2) OGS awards held at the master’s level, nor exceeded the lifetime maximum of four (4) OGS/QEII-GSST awards held at the doctoral level
    • Must not have exceeded the lifetime maximum of six (6) years of government-funded student award support from the following programs/agencies:
      • Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS)
      • Ontario Trillium Scholarships (OTS)
      • Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (QEII-GSST)
      • Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)
      • Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)
      • Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)
