The Rhodes Trust is a nonprofit educational organisation that cultivates outstanding individuals who are frustrated with the status quo and courageous enough to take action. The Rhodes Trust recognise that for many of us, the status quo is not good enough and we are looking for new ideas, new models and new approaches. The selection process is rigorous and candidates must pass a test, have an outstanding academic record, and be a citizen of a country in the British Commonwealth. Scholarship amount details

  • The Rhodes Scholarship covers Oxford University course fees, as well as providing an annual stipend
  • The stipend is £17,310 per annum (£1,442.50 per month) from which Scholars pay all living expenses, including accommodation. Please note – this is not sufficient to cover partners or dependents

Appication Process for this scholarship

  • A birth certificate confirming that applicant meets the age criterion
  • A valid passport or equivalent proof of citizenship such as a Voter ID (with translation, if necessary), confirming that the applicant meets the citizenship criteria
  • The applicant must be a citizen of India, holding an Indian passport, or equivalent proof of citizenship Note: PIO or OCI cardholders do not satisfy the Indian citizenship criteria for this purpose
  • An official transcript from the college or university at which the applicant is studying or has studied, showing grades achieved (to date)
  • Official transcripts from 10th and 12th standard (or equivalent) school-leaving board examinations
  • If the applicant is neither a graduate of a university in India nor in the final year of undergraduate study at a university in India, the applicant must provide evidence (see 2b above) of formal study at an educational institution in India for at least 4 of the last 10 years as of the date of application and completion of a school-leaving exam at a school in India (either 10th or 12th standard or equivalent)
  • A full curriculum vitae should include details about academic qualifications, prizes, scholarships, positions of leadership, employment positions, involvement in student, voluntary, community, or political activities, and any cultural, musical, or sporting accomplishments
    • This should not exceed two A4 (12pt font size) pages in length
    • The CV should be wholly accurate and a fair representation of your achievements
    • The applicant should anticipate that details will be checked for embellishments and inaccuracies
    • Material misrepresentation will result in the disqualification of an application and, where appropriate, the rescinding of a scholarship
  • A head-and-shoulders color photograph (jpg format)
  • A personal statement of no more than 1,000 words please ensure that the personal statement
    • Addresses your general interests and activities What inspires you? What are your passions?
    • Discusses your aims and priorities and the contributions you have made and hope to make to the world and/or your local community
    • Tells us the reasons for wishing to study at the University of Oxford, which course/courses you would wish to pursue, and why It is important that you have a firm idea of which course/courses are viable for you to study at the University of Oxford – not all University of Oxford courses are covered by the Rhodes Scholarship – you should refer to the Conditions of Tenure for further information
  • LOR: Applicants will need to provide a list of six people (your referees) who are willing to submit references on their behalf:
    • At least three referees should be academics who have formally taught and graded applicants in their undergraduate (or, if relevant, postgraduate) studies and who can comment in detail on your academic ability and how well they think the applicant would fare at Oxford
    • Additional referees should testify to the applicant’s character and/or his/her involvement in extra-curricular/service or leadership activities
    • These referees should be persons who are able to comment critically on whether the applicant fulfills the extra-curricular, non-academic requirements of the Scholarship and who can speak in detail to the applicant’s character
  • Applicants will need to provide email addresses for all the referees
  • All applications must be submitted online No alternate method of application is accepted. There is no application fee for submission of the Rhodes Scholarship application form

Additional Information:

  • Only one of the five available Scholarships (and, in exceptional cases, two) may be awarded in the aggregate to (i) candidates who are pursuing or have pursued, their undergraduate studies outside India and (ii) inter-jurisdictional Candidates

Scholarship Eligibility

  • Rhodes Scholars must have completed a Bachelor’s degree before coming up to Oxford, to a sufficiently high standard to meet both the Rhodes and the Oxford criteria
  • Rhodes Criteria:
    • Applicants must be a citizen of India, holding an Indian passport, or equivalent proof of citizenship; PIO or OCI cardholders do not satisfy the Indian citizenship criteria for this purpose
    • Applicants must have undertaken formal study at an educational institution in India for a minimum of 4 of the last 10 years, and have either (i) completed a school-leaving exam (10th or 12th standard or equivalent) at a school in India, or (ii) have received, or be in the final year of, an undergraduate degree at a university in India
    • You must meet either of the below criteria:
    • must be aged 18-23
    • OR (for older candidates who completed their first undergraduate degree later than usual)
    • Must be under the age of 27 AND you must also have completed the academic requirements for your first undergraduate degree
    • Applicants must have completed their undergraduate degree with First Class, or equivalent
    • Successful candidates typically feature within the top few ranks of their graduating classes
    • Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a social engagement (a tea or dinner with the selection committee hosted by the Chairman) and a final interview
    • Applicants must be available to attend both, in person, as no accommodations can be made on the date and time, or mode, of these events
    • Interviews will be held in October or November No candidate will be selected without an interview
  • University of Oxford Criteria:
    • IELTS: 75 with min score of 70 in each component
    • Interview: Interviews are normally held as part of the admissions process and take place throughout the year Of those that apply around a third are invited to interview
    • Candidates will be shortlisted based on academic ability and fit with the course
    • The interview will generally be by telephone or by Skype (preferably with video) by a member of the admissions committee
    • Interviews tend to last around 30 minutes and you can expect to be asked some technical questions
    • Applicants with a full-time degree-level course of a minimum of nine months, at a recognized institution, where the medium of instruction and assessment was entirely in English can be exempted from the English proficiency exam at the discretion of the University
