Student visa shifts
In a remarkable shift, Indian students are flocking to study abroad programs at an unprecedented rate. Despite a decline during the pandemic, the post-pandemic era has witnessed a substantial increase in the number of students opting for international study programs, reaching an all-time high. Alongside, there are notable changes in student visa requirements.
According to the Indian Student Mobility Report 2023, a staggering nearly 13 lakh Indian students are currently participating in or have enrolled in study abroad programs. Several factors contribute to this surge, including increased post-study employment opportunities, a broader array of academic programs, and simplified student visa processes.
United States of America
In the United States, a preferred destination for Indian students, a new rule implemented in 2023 aims to enhance the integrity of the student visa application process. F, M, and J visa applicants must now use correct passport information for profile creation and student visa scheduling, failure to comply may result in appointment rejections.
Canada
Responding to immigration challenges, Canada has implemented measures effective from December 1, 2023. Designated learning institutions (DLIs) will directly verify every applicant’s letter of acceptance with IRCC, combating acceptance letter fraud. Additionally, there will be reassessment of the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program criteria. An increase in the minimum cost of living requirement has been introduced as well.
United Kingdom student visa
With over 7.50 lakh annual student arrivals, the UK has addressed immigration concerns. The government, following a Migration Advisory Committee analysis, has imposed measures to reduce immigration. This affects students’ ability to switch from student visa to work routes and an increase in the student visa application fee.
Australia
Australia, a popular choice for Indian students, has seen a steady increase in enrollment. Recent changes include higher English proficiency test score requirements for student visas. The aim is to maintain a high standard of language proficiency.
France
France, known for fields like fashion, culinary arts, and business, is enhancing the study abroad experience. New guidelines extend the post-study work visa to five years for master’s degree holders. Those studying in France for their master’s can avail a five-year short-stay Schengen visa for job exploration.
Ireland student visa
Ireland allows international graduates to stay for two years on the post-study work visa. PhD holders are eligible for a three-year stay.
Italy
Italy is extending opportunities for Indian students, allowing an additional 12-month stay after degree completion. This provides provisions for professional training and internships aligned with Italian standards.
New Zealand
New Zealand has introduced the IELTS One Skill Retake, recognizing it as a valid means of English language proficiency for immigration. This decision offers flexibility to test takers to retake any one of the four skills if their initial attempt falls short of the desired score.
