History

Established on September 27, 1880, the Guildhall School of Music began its journey in a London warehouse that was not in use. It was the first municipal music college in the United Kingdom, with 62 part-time students.

The school quickly outgrew its first location, and in 1887 it relocated to new premises in John Carpenter Street, as part of a complex of educational buildings constructed by the Corporation of London to house it and the City’s two public schools.

Conservatoires UK, the European Association of Conservatoires, and the Federation of Drama Schools are all members of the school. Guildhall School is also a part of Culture Mile, which runs from Farringdon to Moorgate and is a new home for contemporary culture in ancient London’s working capital. The City of London Corporation, in collaboration with the Barbican, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London Symphony Orchestra, and Museum of London, is bringing the area to life through creative collaborations and exciting events.

Structure

The Guildhall School’s Board of Governors is made up of elected members from the City of London, elected independent members from relevant professions, elected Guildhall School staff members, and the Student Union president.

The school’s old name was the Guildhall School of Music. Situated in the Barbican Complex, it is next to the Barbican Arts Centre, since 1977.

Examinations

Trinity Guildhall Examinations came into existence in 2004 when the Guildhall School of Music and Drama’s external examinations department merged with Trinity College London’s performing arts examinations division. External students can now obtain qualifications in performing and teaching in areas such as music, speech, drama, and dance through the merged examinations board. There was a change in the name Trinity Guildhall in 2012, and the board’s examinations are now offered under the Trinity College London brand.
