What’s changing and when?
As of February 15, 2024, the government has made significant changes to Canada’s Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program. Now, even graduates with master’s degrees completed in less than two years can qualify for a three-year PGWP, provided they meet all other eligibility criteria. However, starting September 1, 2024, students enrolled in curriculum licensing agreement programs will no longer be eligible for a PGWP. Additionally, special measures for distance learning and PGWP validity have been extended until August 31, 2024.
Understanding the Post-Graduation Work Permit
Canada’s Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is an open work permit offered to international students who have completed their studies in Canada. Holders of PGWPs have the freedom to work anywhere in Canada for any employer and for as many hours as they wish. The duration of the PGWP depends on the level and length of the study program completed. As well as the expiry date of the passport, whichever comes first.
Who qualifies for a PGWP?
Not all international students automatically qualify for a PGWP upon graduation from a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada. A DLI is a school approved by a provincial or territorial government to host international students. Graduates of programs lasting at least two years at PGWP-eligible DLIs are eligible for a three-year PGWP. Also graduates of master’s degree programs less than two years in length are eligible.
Application process and timing
Applicants can work in Canada while awaiting the processing of their PGWP application if they submitted it before their student permit expires. There is a 180-day window within which one must apply for a PGWP from the date of completing their study program. Notably, applicants can now apply for a PGWP from abroad if they leave Canada after completing their education.
These changes to Canada’s PGWP program aim to provide more opportunities for international students to gain valuable work experience after completing their studies. Understanding the eligibility criteria and application process is crucial for students planning to take advantage of these opportunities in Canada.
