How is the JEE Main result calculated?
The NTA will use normalization to release the JEE Main result. Since the examination is conducted across different days and sessions, there are chances that some candidates get easier papers than others. To prevent this from happening, NTA adopts the process of normalization to ensure that no candidate is at a disadvantage due to different papers/sessions. Candidates are ranked on the basis of percentile scores based on a predetermined formula.
How to calculate your JEE Main percentile?
The normalized JEE Main scores show the percentage of examinees whose marks are equal to or lower than the highest-scoring candidate in that session.
The following is the formula for calculating your percentile which also determines All India Ranks –
Likewise, candidates can also use the same formula for different subject papers.
JEE Main result percentage score vs. percentile score
The biggest confusion among candidates is that they are unable to distinguish between the JEE Main percentile score and the percentage score. The two are not the same and indicate very different aspects of the examination. First, the JEE Main percentage score is the outcome of absolute marking, whereas the percentile score is related to the relative marking outcome. Percentile also helps in listing the AIR rankings

JEE Main final result
If a candidate has taken the JEE Main examination in both sessions, then the highest scores achieved in both sessions will be used to calculate JEE Main final result and the All India Rank. The final result will include information regarding the candidate’s All India Rank as well as the cut-off score that one needs to have to be able to sit for the JEE Advanced examination. The following information about your scores will be included in the final IIT JEE Mains result –
- Total score in the June session
- Total score in the July session
- The best score out of the two sessions
- JEE Main All India Rank
- Candidate’s category (if applicable)
- JEE Advanced cut-off marks
What’s next?
Once the final JEE Main result is out, those who qualify for the examination will be eligible to register for the counseling procedure conducted by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). Through counseling, candidates are admitted to institutes, that include the IITs, NITs, and GFTIs. Only those who register will be eligible to take part in the counseling session. The JEE Main counseling can take up to seven sessions, that consist of mock seat allotment, locking choices, final allotment, and payment of seat fee.
