Happiness is a flickering feeling. We can’t predict how long it will last. We also can’t predict how and when we will feel it again. That’s what makes it even more desirable. This desire is the reason for my happiness. I used to believe that my happiness depended on other people. They have the responsibility to make me happy; eventually, I realized that I am responsible for my joy. I am the reason for my happiness. After taking a journey within, I learned a very interesting thing. Happiness is a state of mind, and we can control it. We can decide our reason for happiness. They can be a hundred or even zero.
The quest for happiness
Finding your happiness is an exciting journey. It is filled with adventures, darkness, thrill, and, most of all, joy. It is a treasure hunt. The only catch is that it’s supposed to happen within ourselves. No one will witness it other than us.
Before starting this new exciting journey, you need to know some facts about happiness. There will be moments when you feel like giving up or not meeting your expectations of happiness. Sometimes you may also feel that you have cracked the code for being happy forever.
That’s not it! So, let’s get our facts straight before we take this journey within ourselves.
Don’t ‘try’ to be happy
Flowers are the most pleasant things nature has offered us. Do they ‘try’ to be more flowery? No, they just are! Just like that, happiness lies within you. The more you try to be happy, the more you will get disappointed.
Happiness is one of the emotions we feel. It is not a prize or a milestone you must achieve in life. You just need to feel it. It comes from different sources. These sources keep changing with time. This can make you feel like trying harder to get it back by doing the same thing again. When that doesn’t work, it feels like failure.
Just be in the moment. Feel every emotion. We all already have happiness.
Happiness is temporary
Let’s mark this fact in our minds that happiness is an emotion that comes and goes. It has to fade away somewhere in our life to feel other emotions. These other emotions like sadness, anger, frustration, disgust or just numbness are necessary too.
For example, a person finds happiness by being with their partner. After some time, that person starts feeling other emotions than just happiness. That doesn’t mean the person has lost it. It’s just time to feel other emotions and realize the value of the moments that made them happy.
Happiness is not equal to the pleasure
There’s a reason why these are two different words. Although both are temporary emotions, they have different meanings in our lives. Pleasure is something we need to achieve. Happiness is just there.
A lot of people think that materialistic things can bring happiness. They bring pleasure. It is a fleeting feeling that distracts us from the real issues in our lives. We tend to spend everything on pleasure but end up empty-handed. Happiness is much more than just minutes of satisfaction.
Expectations can hurt
Forget about other people. We carry a burden of our own expectations. When we don’t meet those expectations, we feel unhappy and disappointed.
Social media has created an image in our minds that other people live better than us. This creates a pattern of unhappiness. We post something to show off and expect a better response. Those expectations shatter, and we come back to where we started.
Having a big dream is good. It’s the only way to success. But not giving yourself the time to grow can cause distress. Happiness is, having such great dreams but still being aware of reality. There will be highs and lows on this path, it will take time, and you need to be persistent to achieve your goals.
Be you
We all have an idea of happiness. It includes crazy amounts of money, lots of love, and popularity. We have people who have what we desire. There’s nothing wrong with wanting these things. But if you are mistaking them for happiness, then it can be a problem.
Be yourself. You will feel happier when you will become your ideal self. Be yourself while achieving your goals. There can be times when you won’t be able to get exactly what you want. That’s fine. Your journey is more important than your destination.
Being yourself will bring you closer to the little corner that contains all the happiness you desire.
