Launch of the ‘Fair Visa, Fair Chance’ campaign
The National Indian Students and Alumni Union (NISAU) UK launches the ‘Fair Visa, Fair Chance’ campaign in support of the post-study Graduate Route visa. Initially pivotal in supporting the visa allowing international graduates to work for two years after their degree. NISAU UK is worried about possible setbacks in the progress made so far.
Significance of UK’s Graduate Route Visa
The Post Study Work Visa, which is officially called the Graduate Route Visa. It allows overseas graduates completing their studies in the UK to stay on for two or three years after completion of their studies. If you have completed an undergraduate degree or a master’s degree, then a two year period is granted. If you have completed a PhD, then a three year period.
Without the Graduate route, university finances may collapse. The impact of this is not just on international students but also on UK’s home students. Since international students heavily subsidize domestic students and contribute to the funding of world-class research conducted in UK universities.
Campaign’s Initiation
The campaign’s initiation coincides with the Migration Advisory Committee’s (MAC) . The expected report is scheduled for publication in May 2024. This review aims to assess various aspects of the graduate route, including its efficacy, potential abuse, and alignment with the UK higher education system. The Home Office has mentioned that a total of 213,250 visas have been granted under the route. Indian students comprise the largest cohort, receiving 43% of grants last year.
NISAU UK will present evidence to the MAC, with its research and experiences, and including insights gleaned from the annual India-UK Achievers Honours program.
Challenges and future Considerations
Despite concerns over declining student applications from India, as evidenced by recent UCAS figures. The Home Office points to a significant increase in international post-graduate students attending institutions with lower entry requirements. However, the MAC underscores the need for clarity regarding the Graduate Route’s purpose and its alignment with broader objectives related to international student recruitment and workforce needs.
