A public polytechnic institute of technology, Sheridan College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning (formerly Sheridan College of Applied Arts and Technology), are situated in the western portion of the Greater Toronto Area in Ontario, Canada.

Sheridan College, founded in 1967, has built a reputation for excellence in diverse fields such as business, applied computing, engineering technology, animation and illustration, cinema and design, and creative writing and publishing. With campuses located in Oakville, Brampton, and Mississauga, as of 2023, the college boasts an enrollment of approximately 24,500 full-time students and an additional 18,000 continuing education students. History

Sheridan College began operations in 1967. The School of Graphic Design was established in Brampton, Ontario, until it moved to a new campus in Oakville, Ontario, in 1970. Residential dwellings eventually took the place of the school and its surroundings. When classes started in the fall of 1970, the new Oakville facility was still under construction. The classrooms were big and open, with triangular skylights overhead providing the kids with excellent illumination. The photography department utilized darkrooms for processing film and prints and a well-equipped picture studio space. 

Ranking

As of 2022, It is ranked 55th among Canadian colleges. It has a ranking of 1315 by the QS World Rankings of Global Universities. Sheridan College’s ranking is 6115, as it has an overall excellence score on the QS world rankings.

Campuses

There are three campuses of Sheridan College in Ontario. Currently, student accommodation is available only at Davis and Trafalgar campuses. 

Trafalgar Road campus

Sheridan College’s main campus, the Trafalgar Road Campus, is situated in Oakville (1430 Trafalgar Road) and is home to 9,610 students. The Faculty of Animation, Arts, and Design, Canada’s most significant art school, is located on this campus.

Two performance theaters on this campus regularly host performances. The Bruins’ cross country, rugby, and soccer teams play at the Trafalgar Campus.

Theatre & Drama Studies, CCIT, Digital Enterprise Management, and Art & Art History Studies are four cross-campus programs developed through a partnership between the Trafalgar campus and the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) campus.

Davis Campus

About 12,167 students are at the Brampton (7899 McLaughlin Road) Davis campus. It bears the name of William G. Davis, a former premier of Ontario who founded the college system.

Sheridan offers community services, engineering & technology, and applied for health programs at this location. The Center for Mobile Innovation, the Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Design Technologies, and the Center for Healthy Communities are three of the school’s primary centers.

In 2017, Sheridan’s Skills Training Center modernized and moved to the Davis Campus. The center comprises 130,000 square feet of workshops, classrooms, facilities, equipment, and machinery for Sheridan’s pre-trades and apprenticeship programs.

Hazel McCallion campus

Located in Mississauga, McCallion Campus (HMC) (4180 Duke of York Boulevard) nearby Square One Shopping Center, it started in September 2011. Around 2,000 students were part of the first development phase, and 3,700 more students joined when the second building at HMC opened in January 2017. HMC added a new wing in 2017, bringing the total number of pupils it may enroll to almost 5,500.

This is the location of the Pilon School of Business. The business diploma, degree, graduate certificate programs, and programs in advertising, marketing, and visual merchandising. However, they conduct Architectural programs focusing on sustainably built environments in the new wing. It also has a gallery space and a Center for Creative Thinking.

At HMC, there have been various new additions to the student life, food services, recreation, and athletics rooms totaling 70,000 square feet. Sheridan, Sheridan Athletics, and the Sheridan Student Union are working together on the project.

Academics

Sheridan College offers an expansive curriculum with more than 130 programs leading to certifications, degrees, certificates, and post-graduate diplomas. Known for its music theatre performance degree, undergraduate and graduate film programs, and craft and design program, the institution also provides courses in areas such as business, animation, drawing, applied computers, engineering technology, community studies, and liberal studies. Notably, the Faculty of Animation, Arts, and Design at Sheridan received recognition in 2012 from the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) as being “essentially equivalent”, a distinction marking it as the second art institution in Canada to achieve such an accolade.

In the evolving educational landscape of 2023, Sheridan College remains a beacon of research innovation, especially in fields like creative studies and digital innovation. The commitment is evident with over 200 faculty and staff, and more than 2,000 students actively participating in research initiatives. Currently, the college oversees more than 240 meticulously documented active research projects. Housing five unique research centers, they focus on areas ranging from elder research and mobile innovation to advanced manufacturing and music theater. Additionally, the college’s entrepreneurship hub collaborates with an impressive network of over 450 industry partners, fostering a vibrant research environment.
