Western University | The Western Experience

Western University is one of Canada’s leading research universities. From foundational to applied knowledge, Western discoveries promote social, health, economic, and cultural development in Canada and worldwide.

The university draws students with broad worldviews who want to learn, interact in, and lead in international societies. Students from 117 countries participate in classroom experiences and study-abroad, research and service activities to enrich their perspectives and expertise. Western University | Campuses

Located in London, Ontario, The University of Western is near the southern end of the Quebec City-Windsor Corridor. Surrounded by residential neighborhoods, with the Thames River cutting across the eastern portion of the campus. Western Road is the university’s main north-south transit artery. The core campus is roughly 170.8 hectares and contains most of the university’s student dormitories and teaching facilities (422 acres).

Student apartments occupy most of Western’s building space, accounting for around 31% of total building space. Teaching and research facilities occupy the second most significant building space, accounting for approximately 28 percent of the entire building space. Most of these facilities are used for research, accounting for 48 percent of all teaching and research facilities. Classrooms account for approximately 27% of all teaching and research facilities, with instructional laboratories accounting for the remaining 24%.

University College and the Physics and Astronomy Building are the core campus’s oldest academic structures. Both structures began construction in 1922. The Amit Chakma Engineering Facility, which opened in September 2018, is the newest academic building on campus. The Western Interdisciplinary Research Building, or WIRB, is the latest structure on campus, housing cutting-edge research facilities for cognitive neuroscience, the Brain and Mind Institute, BrainsCAN, and the Rotman Institute for Philosophy.

Rankings

In the 2022 Academic Ranking of World Universities, the university was at 201-300 in the world and 9-12 in Canada. The university was 172nd in the world and seventh in Canada in the QS World University Rankings 2023 and was at 201-250 in the globe and 8-10 in Canada in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2023. The university was 300th worldwide and tenth in Canada in the U.S. News & World Report global university rankings for 2022-23. Western was 11th in the Medical-Doctoral university category by Maclean’s in 2023, along with Université Laval. The university was also 13th in Maclean’s reputation category.

The university has also been in a variety of publications that assess the employment prospects of its graduates. The university was 43rd in the world and third in Canada in QS’s 2022 graduate employability ranking.

Faculties

Among the university’s 11 faculties and schools are the Don Wright Faculty of Music, the Faculty of Arts & Humanities, the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Health Sciences, the Faculty of Information & Media Studies, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Social Science, the Ivey School of Business, and the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. The Faculty of Social Sciences had the most undergraduate students at Western in September 2016, with 7,114 full-time and part-time undergraduate students enrolled in one of their programs. The Faculty of Health Science had the most graduate student enrollment at Western in the same year, with 821 full-time and part-time graduate students. The School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies is the university’s central administrative unit for graduate education. However, it does not have its faculty or academic school.

Tuition Fees

Your tuition covers the expenditures of completing your degree. Tuition varies by program, and you are billed three times each year at the start of each semester (January 1, May 1, and September 1).

Tuition and fees are payable five business days after the start of each term. Graduate students can pay half their tuition and fees within five business days of the beginning of each semester and the remaining balance five weeks after that.

Canadian students

• Undergraduate tuition fees -$34,198 to $39,105
• Graduate tuition fee – $19,364
