British Council Launches STEM Scholarships for Women in STEM
In a bid to foster gender diversity in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), the British Council, in collaboration with various UK universities, has introduced the British Council Scholarships for Women in STEM program. The initiative aims to empower female graduates in STEM disciplines, including those with dependents, by providing substantial financial support.
Gender Gap Spurs British Council’s STEM Scholarships for South Asian Women
This announcement comes against the backdrop of statistics revealing a notable gender gap in STEM participation. According to the Global Gender Gap Report 2023 by the World Economic Forum, women represent merely 27 per cent of India’s STEM workforce, despite constituting nearly 43 per cent of STEM graduates in the country. The scholarship program is open to applicants from India and other South Asian countries, with a total of 25 scholarships earmarked for deserving candidates. Partner universities include prestigious institutions such as Queen Mary University of London, Anglia Ruskin University, Greenwich University, The University of Southampton, and Coventry University.

The STEM scholarships covers a range of expenses, including tuition fees, stipends, travel costs, visa fees, health coverage, and English language support. Enrolled scholars have the opportunity to pursue various STEM-related courses, including Data Science, Computer Science, Pharmaceutical Science. Also Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Management, Civil Engineering Management, Intelligent Healthcare, and Actuarial Science, among others.”
Closing Gender Gaps
Since its inception in 2020, the scholarship program has awarded over 300 scholarships. With 92 scholars enrolled in their selected courses during the 2023-24 global cohorts. Notably, 52 Indian women have been among the recipients, pursuing one-year postgraduate studies in the UK. With the launch of this initiative, the British Council seeks to address the gender disparity prevalent in STEM fields. This will contribute to the advancement of women’s participation in science and technology on a global scale.
