Red River College is the largest institute of applied learning in Manitoba

Red River College of Applied Arts, Science, and Technology is one of the oldest educational institutions, founded in 1938. This is the province of Manitoba’s largest institute for applied learning and research. It offers over 200 degree, diploma, and certificate programs in regular and distance learning modes, with an annual student enrollment of over 21,000 on average.

An overview

Red River College (RRC) is Manitoba’s largest institute of applied learning. The university is well known for providing accessible, innovative, applied learning and research options in a cutting-edge setting, producing skilled graduates who drive the Manitoba economy. With over 100 career-related programs and hundreds of courses available part-time via classroom or distance delivery, RRC provides students with a flexible, accessible, and high-quality education that will help them succeed.

Red River College has the province’s most comprehensive trades and technology programs, and its facilities are constantly expanding to meet labor and training needs. The college provides various credentials, such as apprenticeship training, certificates, diplomas, and select degrees.

These programs have one thing in common- they are all applied learning programs developed with and for the industry. RRC has eight campuses in Manitoba- Notre Dame, Exchange District, Stevenson, Interlake, Peguis-Fisher River, Portage, Steinbach, and Winkler. Every year, approximately 30,000 students enroll in college.

History

The Industrial Vocational Education Centre, the forerunner to RRC Polytech, was founded in the mid-1930s by three Winnipeggers- R.J. Johns, T.O. Durin, and Otto Peters. The Centre provided evening programs to train unskilled and unemployed youths in various trades. The Centre’s success led the federal government to provide funding through the Department of Labour in 1938. Carpentry, sheet metal, machine shop, needle trades, welding and forging, power engineering, and radio were among the first courses offered.

By 1948, the center got the new name of Manitoba Technical Institute (MTI) and had become Manitoba’s first public post-secondary vocational school.

The Central School of Practical Nurses moved from St. Joseph’s Hospital to MTI in 1950. Advisory committees comprised of top executives from local businesses and industries assisted MTI in remaining relevant to changing industry and business practices.

The Notre Dame campus was built in 1963, and there was a change in the college name again to the Manitoba Institute of Technology (MIT). Half of the campus was an arts and science complex known as the Manitoba Institute of Applied Arts (MIAA). In 1969, the two halves merged to form Red River Community College (RRCC), and in 1998, the authorities dropped the word ‘community’, giving rise to the current RRC Polytech.

Stevenson Aviation & Aerospace Training Centre was founded in January 2002, and in April 2002, Stevenson Aviation merged with Red River College to form the Stevenson Campus.

Built in 2004, The Princess Street Campus in Downtown Winnipeg came into existence with a strong emphasis on multimedia design, computer technology, and the popular Creative Communications program, which prepares students for careers in advertising, journalism, media production, and public relations.

In honor of former Manitoba Premier Duff Roblin, the Princess Street Campus was renamed the Roblin Centre in 2011. The Exchange District Campus includes the Roblin Centre and the Paterson GlobalFoods Institute.

After nearly ten years of broadcasting, RRC Polytech discontinued over-the-air broadcasting of student radio station 92.9 Kick FM on July 4, 2012, due to a change in campus radio policy by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission.

Campus

RRC has eight campuses throughout Manitoba, including several in rural areas.

The College has nearly 22,000 students enrolled, and new students join a sizable global learning community. 24 percent of RRC students are international students and represent over 60 countries.

Red River College has campuses in Winnipeg, Selkirk, Steinbach, Portage la Prairie, Southport, Peguis, and Winkler, as well as Portage la Prairie, Southport, Peguis, and Winkler. The two largest campuses are in Notre Dame and Winnipeg’s Exchange District. 

The Manitoba Hydro Electrical Technology Scholarship, the Hannah (Nancy) Boon Bursary, the ‘Our Children, Our Ways’ Distance Education Award, the West Region Child and Family Services Residential Care Unit Award, the Project Neecheewan Award, the Technical Communication Faculty Scholarship, the Pitblado LLP Legal Administrative Assistant Awards, and the Employment Equity Education Awards are all available at Red River College. The institute provides opportunities to participate in sports, such as volleyball, basketball, and soccer.

Notre Dame campus

The campus houses the majority of RRC’s skilled trades, transportation technology, health sciences, and engineering programs. It also has a wide range of services, facilities, and amenities.

The Exchange District campus

It is located in downtown Winnipeg. It houses RRC’s creative arts, IT, culinary arts, and hospitality programs and two student-run dining options, Jane’s and the Culinary Exchange.

Stevenson campus

Manitoba has Canada’s third-largest aerospace sector. Hands-on training in aircraft engine overhaul, aircraft maintenance, component building, or management positions such as maintenance and quality assurance director.
