History

Established in 1881 in the Dakota Territory, Dakota State University was a school only for teacher education. Its strong programs, Trojan pride, and innovative approaches made it one of the Midwest’s most technologically advanced campuses. From the very first graduating class to the most recent, the students know that their degree comes from a university with a rich history and a bright future.

Campus

The historic portion of  DSU’s 61-acre campus includes five buildings and an open lawn area called the ‘Campus Green.’ Built in 1886, Beadle Hall is the campus’s oldest structure. The Beacom Institute of Technology is the newest structure.

As of 2017, plans for a new cyber research and development facility and organization called the Madison Cyber Labs, or MadLabs, are also in the works.

The MadLabs building has been completed as of 2019. Renovations to the athletic facilities at the school are also in the works.

Student life

DSU is a small school with a big soul. Its campus is a warm, welcoming environment that helps to strengthen and improve students’ educational experiences. Students at DSU get the benefits of a small school as well as the amenities of a world-class university.

Its 3,000-plus student body is involved in athletics, academic teams, research, and clubs and organizations. There’s a club for everyone at DSU, from ultimate frisbee to anime, intramural sports, to volunteer opportunities.

Living on campus has numerous advantages, and it improves student success rates. This is why Dakota State University requires students to live on campus for two years. DSU is home to nearly 1,000 people. Unless they are married, exempted, or living with family within a 60-mile driving distance of the campus, all full-time students within two years of high school graduation must live on campus.

Student organizations

Three institutional organizations that are essential to the DSU experience are present here. The Trojan Times (in print and online) serves as the campus community’s student voice, and the Student Senate represents students’ interests within the university community.

Academic teams

As a top competitor on one of DSU’s academic teams, students get to hone their problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaboration skills. In this way, they can display their Trojan Pride across the country.

Clubs

More than 35 student-run clubs are present on the DSU campus.

The Space Club will help you build model rockets.

Students can take part in performance art in the Theatre Club.

Students can participate in organizations such as The Alliance (LBGTQ students and allies), the Native American Student Association, or the American Association of University Women (AAUW @ DSU) to celebrate diversity.
