About the Avery Hill campus

Located in Eltham, southeast London, the Avery Hill campus lies mainly within the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Surrounded by green spaces, it has excellent teaching and sporting facilities, as well as student housing. Avery Hill is an excellent choice for students looking to study in London. Avery Hill House

John Thomas North, who made his fortune in Chile’s sodium nitrate trade, built a palatial residence, the Avery Hill House. Following North’s death, the London County Council purchased the house in July 1902, and the expansion of its grounds happened in 1903 to form Avery Hill Park.

North’s house became Avery Hill College of Education in 1906, later incorporating two adjacent buildings. Within a year of its establishment, the residential college grew to be the largest of LCC’s training colleges. With frequent oversubscription, in 79 years, it trained over 15,000 teachers. In 1985, the college merged with Thames Polytechnic, and in 1993, the university got its new name, the University of Greenwich. This university went on to have various extensive facilities at the nearby Southwood site.

Winter Garden

The house is notable for its indoor winter garden, which is the second-largest Victorian glasshouse in the UK after the Temperate House at Kew Gardens. It is part of one of the most extensive and expensive garden arrangements ever built as part of an English private house. The Winter Garden had fallen into disrepair by the early twenty-first century. A campaign aimed at restoring the Winter Garden and protecting the Mansion’s heritage by making it accessible to the public is in progress.

During the study term, the Student Village at Avery Hill Campus houses approximately 1,000 students, giving it a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. A café, canteen, shop, launderette, bicycle parking, and a fully equipped gym is available on-site (fees applied for additional facilities).

In nearby Eltham, there are numerous pubs, clubs, and restaurants. Students can also visit Bexleyheath’s Broadway Shopping Centre or take a bus to Bluewater, one of Europe’s largest shopping and leisure complexes.

If students want to see some sporting action, they can go to The Valley and watch Charlton Athletic Football Club play, or they can go to Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, which hosts a number of high-profile athletics events.

Not to mention the 86-acre Avery Hill Park, which features an outdoor gym, outdoor tennis courts, and marked footpaths that are part of the Green Chain Walk.

Getting to and from Avery Hill campus

There are numerous ways to get around Avery Hill and Eltham if you want to travel around the region.

By bus

A free shuttle bus connects the Avery Hill and Greenwich campuses. Buses operated by Transport for London (TFL) also run at regular intervals.

Taking the train

National Rail services are available at New Eltham and Falconwood stations.

By car

Parking is available on campus for students (students might have to pay fees for this facility).

The Student Village on the Avery Hill Campus houses over 1,200 students. Around 70% of the students who live here attend Greenwich Campus and use the free inter-campus bus.

Aragon, Boleyn, and Seymour Courts

These courts have about 550 single-study bedrooms in flats with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities, mostly for four or five students, but some maisonettes have seven rooms.

Cleves, Howard, Parr, and Tudor Courts

These courts have approximately 650 rooms. Each single study bedroom has an en-suite shower/toilet pod, and the kitchens are shared by the residents. Six students share the majority of flats, but Tudor Court flats are larger and have separate bedrooms.

Study bedrooms start from £119.14/week

If a student wants their own space at a low cost, then they can take a look at the shared flats available on campus. The room has plenty of storage and study space, and all rooms share a bathroom as well as a large kitchen and living area for socializing.

Flats in Aragon Court are more modern than those in Boleyn and Seymour Courts.

When applying for a room, simply select Small, Standard, or Large – students have the option of selecting a room in Aragon Court if they so desire (it is subject to availability).

En-suite study bedrooms start from £177.33/week

If a student prefers the privacy of their own bathroom, then the en-suite rooms provide ample space for study and storage, as well as a communal living area and kitchen. The majority of flats are shared by six students, but Tudor Court flats are larger and have nine bedrooms, which a larger group of students can share.
