Being from a Commerce background, switching to videos and animation has been quite the journey for him, and he is successfully creating the visual magic now!
What did you study, and how did video editing happen to you?
Vatsal found his passion for creative works right from when he was in school. So, he began watching YouTube videos and mastering his skills in making presentations, applying animations, trying out transitions, etc. While he did his bachelor’s in Accounting and Finance, he simultaneously worked towards building his profile by pursuing a 3-year course in Animation. He learned everything from graphic design, 2D and 3D animation, and sound and video editing to motion graphics, VFX, etc.
Consequently, Vatsal won many awards for his presentations and video editing skills in college, which motivated him to enter this industry full-time.
What does your work routine look like?
Well, Vatsal’s work routine is nothing short of a marathon. He tells us that he starts working on a project by first creating a storyboard. Then, he works on creating a script for the project and assembling all the raw footage/materials needed for the video. After that, things like adding motion graphics and sound effects, and syncing the video with the music come into the picture. He ends his video by making color corrections.
What is the one thing you love about video editing?
While creativity is one thing that Vatsal loves about this field, myriad other aspects make him want to stick to video editing. Besides, getting an opportunity to brainstorm and ideate different projects has always been exciting for him. He also enjoys working with different tools and software for various projects.
What are the skills needed as a video editor?
As per Vatsal, video editors need a specific set of skills to thrive in this industry. He talks about the importance of having attention to detail. One should know about the camera angles and work towards giving a proper flow to the video. Also, as a video editor, one must keep the target audience in mind while working on a project.
Another must-have skill would be organizational skills which will help them structure the raw materials to use the right ones in the right place.
There are times when Vatsal faces technical glitches with the software and needs to resolve them. Hence, problem-solving is another essential skill for video editors and motion graphics artists.
“Some projects might include a lot of back and forth; sometimes the entire project is changed last minute, so we need to have the patience to work through things.”
How do you get through a creative block?
Working in a creative field comes with its own challenges; the top being going through a creative block. But, there are sure some ways to get through these times. For Vatsal, it’s all about taking a step back, pausing for a moment, and doing something different from his normal routine.
There are times when he either visits mountains or beaches to clear his head and then gets back to work and starts afresh.
What is the final advice to people who aspire to be video editors?
If you aspire to make a mark in this industry, it is imperative for you to keep evolving and being up to date with what is new in the industry. Besides, use a proper system with a significant amount of RAM and a faster processor to work efficiently.
