In Birmingham, England, there is a university called Birmingham City University. It was founded in 1843 as the Birmingham College of Art, became a polytechnic in 1971, and was granted university status in 1992. Of the five universities in Birmingham, it is the second largest.

One of the most significant increases at any university, the number of applications for 2009 entrance increased by 37% from 2008. For honors degree programs, there are typically six applicants per opening and an entry criterion of 112 UCAS points; other courses have different standards.
Library
There are four libraries at the university with over 950,000 books and 9,000 print and online periodicals spread across all campuses in Birmingham: Mary Seacole Library (located at the City South Campus), Curzon Library (located at the City Centre Campus, which holds the Conservatoire library collection), Vittoria Street Library and the Margaret Street Library (School of Art).
