History of Cornell University

Andrew Dickson White of Syracuse and Ezra Cornell of Ithaca met in January 1864 in the state of New York. Together, they founded Cornell University in 1865.

The university was inaugurated on 7th October 1868. The first batch was selected through an entrance test given to the applicants on the previous day.

The first class had 412 students. It was the largest entering batch in any American university at the time. It was one of the first institutions to take in women students alongside men. The first woman admitted to Cornell University was in 1870.

One of the most iconic structures on the campus is the McGraw Clocktower. It is 173 feet tall and is visible from anywhere in Ithaca.
