Calculating the grade point average is a substantial aspect of college and school life. We need to calculate grades in various forms and there are several ways to do it. The GPA technique is the one that is most frequently used to determine scores. The conversion from SGPA to CGPA is the only part of this procedure that seems a little perplexing but it is a very straightforward concept. Although the SGPA and CGPA have similar goals, they are different from one another and are computed in different ways.
What is SGPA?
SGPA is one of the numerous grading systems used to determine a student’s academic progress in college. Essentially, it is the grade point average that is determined at the end of each semester. You must remember that the SGPA uses a 10-point rating system for accurate calculations.
To achieve a high CGPA, it is essential to have a strong SGPA. This matters a lot because a high CGPA is crucial for securing a spot at a prestigious university.
How to calculate the SGPA?
You will be able to calculate SGPA once you have a basic understanding of the concept of SGPA and how it affects your final result. To determine your SGPA, you must first tally up all of the grade points you earned for a given academic term and then calculate their average.
The methodology listed below can also be used to determine your SGPA-
1. Determine how many points you receive for each subject.
2. Multiply the number of credits for each course by the grade you received in that subject.
3. Include every item you obtained in step one.
4. To determine your grade point average (SGPA), divide the total you arrive at after adding the results of each subject by the total number of credits.
To understand this approach, consider the example given below
Suppose the following is listed as each subject’s credit:
Subject 3- 3
Let’s now assume that you received the grades shown below in each of these subjects:
Now, you have to multiply each of the grades with their respective subject credits:
1- 2 x 8 = 16
2- 3 x 7.8 = 23.4
3- 3 x 9 = 27
Following this, you need to get the addition of all the products:
16 + 23.4 + 27 = 64.4. This is your total score.
Then add all the credits of individual subjects:
(Subject 1 + Subject 2 + Subject 3) which is 2 + 3 + 3 = 8
Finally, divide the total score you get by the total credits of the subjects:
64.4 / 8 = 8.3
Therefore, your SGPA is 8.3.
Let us look at the table below to understand the calculations
SGPA= Grade Points/ Total Credit
The below table will help you get some clarity on how the grade points are calculated

The calculation system might differ from one university to the other.
Method to convert SGPA to a percentage?
If you have your final grades in the form of an SGPA or GPA, you should be able to precisely convert the numbers to prevent making mistakes and thereby missing out on important opportunities.
Finding appropriate college courses and a better understanding of your scope will be easier for you if you are aware of your score percentage. You must be aware of the percentages you have attained in each semester to assess your development and make plans for the future.
Once you have calculated your SGPA, it is rather easy to calculate your score percentage. You can use a standardized formula for the procedure. Simply multiply your SGPA by 10 and taking 7.5 off your outcome will give you your percentage.
Using the aforementioned example as a guide, use the following formula to determine the percentage from SGPA
(SGPA x 10) – 7.5 = Percentage
(8.3 x 10) – 7.5 = 75.5%
Since many educational boards use diverse ways to test, grade, and evaluate students throughout the course of an academic year, their interpretation in a standardized style becomes crucial for admissions.
As a result, we have tried to provide you with all the necessary information about both SGPA and CGPA.
- Semester Grade Point Average or SGPA is the average of all grade points earned in all tests for a single semester. It is the most popular way to determine a student’s performance, so universities and institutions all over the world ask for SGPA.
- To calculate your SGPA, you must first tally up all of the grade points you earned for a given academic term and then calculate their average. Once you have a clear idea about SGPA, then you can do it very easily.

Q1. Are the SGPA and CGPA equivalent?
Ans- CGPA and SGPA are not equivalent. While SGPA only considers your progress for one semester, CGPA considers your performance for the duration of your academic career.
Q2. What is an ideal SGPA?
Ans- Nine or higher is considered a good SGPA score.
Q3. Which is more important, the CGPA or SGPA?
Ans- The fact that CGPA is calculated over a longer time than SGPA is a major difference between the two. Maintaining a strong SGPA throughout the course would help you earn a good final grade point average (CGPA). Hence, both CGPA and SGPA are important. If you want to apply to international universities, then it depends on which score they have asked for.
