Monroe College | A brief overview

Founded in 1933 as the Monroe School of Business, Monroe College is a women’s institute that pioneered the teaching of work skills to female students. Mildred King founded the school in the Bronx, New York City. The first classes were held at the former Starlight Ballroom.

In 1989, Monroe School of Business got its new name, Monroe Business Institute, later it became Monroe College. Today, it is a coeducational private college with campuses in the Bronx, New Rochelle, and the Caribbean island of St Lucia.

Monroe College offers undergraduate courses in seven disciplines- Allied Health, Business and Accounting, Criminal Justice, Education, Hospitality and Culinary, Information Technology, and Nursing. Master’s degrees are also available in accounting, computer science, business administration, public health, hospitality management, and criminal justice.

The Bronx campus has several unique training facilities, including the Human Patient Simulation Center at the School of Nursing. Law and health students can also participate in a mock court and a simulated pharmacy on this campus.

Monroe College highly values work experience. Students can put their skills to use through partnerships with local businesses or at the college itself. For example, culinary students are in charge of one of Monroe’s cafeterias. Students can choose between the busy, urban Bronx and the quiet, suburban New Rochelle campuses. Both campuses have their own recreational centers and clubs.

Monroe’s athletic teams are known as Mustangs. Men’s and women’s soccer, track and field, and cross-country teams, as well as men’s basketball and football, compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I.

Campus

The campus at New Rochelle comprises of six buildings, a Culinary Arts Centre, and a restaurant run by students called ‘The Dining Lab’. Dining Lab provides students with the opportunity to hone their management, culinary and hospitality skills. The Saint Lucia campus is close to Castries, the Caribbean island’s capital.

There are seven faculties of undergraduate degree programs- the School of Allied Health with five degree programs, the School of Business and Accounting with seven degree programs, the School of Criminal Justice with four degree programs, The Culinary Institute of New York at Monroe College with two degree programs, the School of Hospitality Management with two degree programs, the School of Education with one degree program, and the School of Information Technology with one degree program.

Monroe College also offers five degrees through the School of Allied Health, seven degrees through the School of Business and Accounting, five degrees through the School of Criminal Justice, three degrees through the School of Hospitality Management, three degrees through the School of Information Technology, and one degree through the School of Nursing.

Monroe College’s student life is filled with activities, sports, competitions, and opportunities provided by more than 50 clubs with over 700 student members. Monroe College competes in many sports, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field, and women’s volleyball, in the National Junior College Athletic Association.
