International Education Policy Shifts Drive Decline in UK, Canada, Australia Student Interest
Recent shifts in international education policy are reshaping student preferences, with reports suggesting a decline in interest for studying in the UK, Canada, and Australia. According to findings from ICEF Monitor, there has been a noticeable decrease in demand, particularly from students in India. The ICEF report draws on research conducted by the International Development Programme (IDP), titled “The Voice of the International Student,” indicating that stringent policies in these countries are dissuading prospective students. With data collected from 2,500 students across 67 countries in January 2024, the survey highlights a growing uncertainty among students considering education in the UK, Canada, and Australia. Conversely, the United States is witnessing an upward trend in popularity among international students.
Doubts Rise on UK, Australia, and Canada Study Plans
Nearly half of the surveyed students (49%) expressed doubts about studying in the UK, while considerable hesitancy was also noted towards Australia (47%) and Canada (43%). The new regulations align with governments’ efforts to enhance immigration management and ensure quality education, as outlined in the ICEF Monitor report.
Decline in Canadian Education, Rise in US Interest
Meanwhile, Studyportals’ data underscores a significant decline in demand for Canadian education, coupled with a notable surge in interest in the US in 2023. The diplomatic tensions between Canada and India, along with shifts in government policies, have contributed to this decline. Both Canada and Australia previously welcomed international students, but changes in policies have affected their appeal. For instance, the UK announced restrictions on international students bringing family members from January 2024. Furthermore, the IDP research identifies the US as the preferred alternative destination for students reconsidering their options, while Italy has emerged as a growing attraction among international students, as indicated by the ICEF Monitor report.
