Introduction of Genuine Student Requirement
Australia is intensifying student visa regulations in response to soaring migration levels, aiming to ensure the authenticity of students’ intentions to study in the country. Effective from March 23, the Genuine Student (GS) requirement replaces the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) criterion, reflecting a proactive approach to immigration management. This shift, announced as part of the Australian Government’s Migration Strategy on December 11, 2023, underscores the nation’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of its education system.
Financial Documentation Requirement
Applicants are now required to demonstrate savings of $24,505 to meet the revised visa eligibility standards. This stringent financial criterion aligns with Australia’s commitment to upholding financial stability within its education sector. According to a Reuters report, Home Affairs Minister stated that these measures aim to reduce migration levels while fulfilling the government’s pledge to address systemic issues inherited in the migration strategy.
“Genuine Student Test” Implementation
Australia introduces a “genuine student test” alongside the Genuine Student requirement to prevent visa misuse. This ensures students genuinely intend to study in Australia, considering various factors. The Genuine Student (GS) requirement replaces the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) criterion from March 23, 2024, tightening immigration rules. The GTE requirement persists for applicants of Student Guardian visas.
Enhanced English Requirement
In light of recent policy revisions, there will be an elevation in English language standards for student and graduate visas. This entails an increase in the required IELTS score. It aims to guarantee applicants possess the requisite language proficiency to excel academically in Australia. Additionally, concerns arise from the significant increase in the number of Indian students hosted by Australia in 2022, totaling 100,009, regarding the potential repercussions of these visa regulation changes on Indian students’ acceptance rates.
