UAE experts: Generative AI’s major impact on education since ’90s

Generative AI is poised to be the most significant revolution in the educational sector since the internet’s rapid growth in the ’90s. Specialists shared this insight at a conference held in Dubai titled “The Future of Generative AI in Education.” Attendees at this event comprised vital figures from the government, private sector, and academic realms.

The potential and challenges of Generative AI in education

It can produce diverse content forms, from text to images. However, as educators integrate this technology, experts emphasize the necessity for comprehensive training. They also highlighted the importance of students approaching AI-generated content with critical thinking due to potential bias or mistakes.

A perspective from University of Birmingham Dubai

At the University of Birmingham Dubai’s campus, Dr. Ruchit Agrawal, the head of outreach at the School of Computer Science, commented on the transformative power of AI in education. “Generative AI will usher in a new era in teaching methodologies and assessment techniques,” he noted. He mentioned how leading AI models, like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard, can craft content from given prompts, emphasizing the need for educators to shift their focus to nurture students as problem creators and identifiers.

Reimagining the role of AI in personalized learning

Leveraging generative AI’s adaptability, which spans text, imagery, and audio, provides unique opportunities in education. Furthermore, it can offer tailored learning experiences and support students with special educational requirements. Noshaba Anbreen, from the University of Birmingham Dubai, opined that while generative AI in education is a topic of intense debate, the focus should be on its potential rather than apprehensions. She believes embracing AI is essential for preparing students for a future saturated with AI-driven industry roles.

UAE’s forward-looking approach to AI in education

UAE’s dedication to integrating advanced technologies in education is evident. The Ministry of Education, earlier this year, unveiled plans to incorporate AI-based tutors in schools. Moreover, the upcoming Dubai Assembly for Generative AI, endorsed by Hamad Al Shirawi, the director of the assembly, aims to pave the way for AI’s future and acquaint governments with the myriad opportunities it presents. Al Shirawi recognized the transformative nature of this technology, asserting Dubai’s consistent efforts to stay ahead in leveraging emerging tech for the betterment of its residents.

By embracing generative AI, the UAE envisions a future where technological advancements enhance the educational experience, promising a bright future for the next generation.
