Founded in 1853 in Gainesville, Florida, the University of Florida is one of the country’s oldest public research universities. The University of Florida, sometimes known as UF or UFL, is one of 17 universities that comprise the Association of American Universities. From Florida Agriculture College in the 1860s, UF officially began operating as a full-fledged university in September 1906. It was in 1947 that UFL accepted its first female students to study on its campus. The University has accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.It is the third-largest Florida institution by student enrollment and the sixth-largest single-campus university in the United States. It comprises 16 academic colleges and around 150 research centers. The university’s seal is also the state seal of Florida, which appears on the state flag in blue rather than in numerous colors.
The University of Florida’s intercollegiate athletic teams competes in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Their sports teams have 45 national championships, 40 of which are NCAA titles, and 275 individual national championships in their more than a century-long existence. In its 2021 edition, US News & World Report placed the University of Florida as the fifth-best public university in the country and tied for the 28th spot overall among all national universities, public and private.
U.S. News & World Report placed the engineering school as the 38th best in the US in 2013, with programs in biological engineering third, materials engineering 11th, industrial engineering 13th, aerospace engineering 26th, chemical engineering 28th, environmental engineering 30th, computer engineering 31st, civil engineering 32nd, electrical engineering 34th, and mechanical engineering 44th.
The University of Florida was ranked 86th among global universities in the 2018 Academic Ranking of World Universities, based on overall research output and faculty awards. The University of Florida was placed 18th among national universities in 2017 by Washington Monthly, using criteria based on research, community service, and social mobility. Forbes ranked the university 68th in the country in 2018, the university’s lowest national ranking from a major publication. In contrast to previous rankings, this one prioritizes net positive financial effects and places liberal arts colleges ahead of most research universities.
In its current ‘Best 380 Colleges Rankings,’ the Princeton Review placed the University of Florida 13th for ‘Best Value Colleges without Aid,’ 18th for ‘Lots of Beer,’ and 42nd for ‘Best Value Colleges.’ In 2014, it was also one of the vegan-friendly schools, according to a PETA report.
